California Red-Sided Gopher?

That's for sale???
California Red-Sided Garter?

My mom's friend sent me these pictures of a snake in her garden. I think it's a Ca. Red-sided Garter, although the head color doesn't match exactly. Does anyone else think that's what it is?

Meant to say garter, not gopher. It was early! That's one beautiful snake you have Roy, but it doesn't match the one in the picture. The colors aren't the same, especially the head. She lives in the Coarsegold area, near Yosemite National park, if that helps. I couldn't find a snake that matched exactly in my Stebbin's book, but the garter was the closest. I don't know if the juveniles have different coloration than adults as some of the racers do, or if there's differences in coloration amongst the same species.

Definitely not a red sided, I've got one too (no picture though, ) and they are very different from the one you posted. I have seen lighter red sideds, mine is pumpkin orange, but they all have the distinct dots or squares going down their sides.

Beautiful snake though! I'm jealous, a golden garter.

Here are some links to california snakes that look similar.

Looking at those picture I'm inclined to think a Diablo range. A juvenile perhaps. The Santa Cruz only has one dorsal stripe and this one clearly has one dorsal and two side stripes. The juvenile photo looks pretty much like it. There are a few spots of red down the side as well if you look carefully in the first picture. Either way, they're just going to leave it hang out.

That is actually Mets38's garter. I WISH it was mine- here in boring Connecticut, our garters are fairly ho-hum in appearance. We have some nice Eastern Milks though. I tried to get a hatchling going once, but it was tiny and refused pinks, so I re-released it. Gonna try again one of these days.
