Can corn snakes hiss?

Plissken

The title says it all ;)

I was thinking about this last night and I've heard of corns coiling in to an S, striking, biting, rattling their tails, even trying to flatten their necks like cobras, yet I've never heard of a corn hissing. This being a stereotype of snakes I suppose, I wondered if corns can hiss, or if it's untrue that all snakes hiss.

Anyone ever been hissed at? :grin01:

yes. aidan has hissed at me. first time i've ever been hissed at. he is also my most feisty corn. he's calmed down a lot since i first got him.

Very cool. (Not that you were hissed at mind you, but c'mon, snakes should hiss :p)

It can't be a thing they do regularily though?
Another question, what is the purpose of the hiss? Cats hiss too; what's it meant to do? In what way would it threaten or deter a potential predator?

Yep, I have one mean little *&^%$#$@ that hisses at me as he strikes. And I think you're right, that it is done to be more threatening. Startles me now and then.

Mine have hissed but it's not the classic 'sssss' sound like you would expect, more like a quick 'pffft' and I have noticed it's usually the same two snakes that do it, both females. They are two of the less friendly snakes I have, the anery mot still strikes at me sometimes and she makes the hissing sound the most often. It's usually when I first touch her to pick her up and is accompanied by a jerky movement.

Cornsnakes seem to only do a short hiss as they are striking. Nothing spectacular. however, if you are capable of catching a bullsnake or pacific gopher snake wild....wow. They are VERY serious about their hissing. Long drawn out hisses that last for over a minute.

Interesting - wonder why snakes have different hisses? You'd think a hiss would be pretty much of a muchness, wouldn't you :shrugs:

I find the hiss really interesting. It's a fascinating sound. This probably sounds incredibly stupid, but I've always wanted to hear a snake perform it. It's just so stereotypically snakelike, I love it :grin01:

I've always thought it sounded more like a spit. You know, like a cat when they are frightened?

My bloodred girls do it when they are "attacking" their already dead hoppers. LoL... they're vicious!!!!!

My bloodred girls are quite agressive snakes. They are sisters and very similar in temperament which is alert, on the prowl and ready to strike at prey. Kira actually struck so hard and fast that she got wound around the hopper AND my tongs before I could release the hopper. Pretty funny.

Sometimes my female snow motley, Moya will do it too and so will my female MBK, Leggs. But the Bloodred girls do it always.

HEY - maybe it's a female thing huh? LoL....

I described the hiss as more of a spit when my snakes are feeding. However, both my male and female Western Hognoses (Gimley and Gimlet) do it when they feel threatened. They flatten out their head and make a classic ssssssssss sound - it looks threatening too! When these two eat they don't make a sound, they just start chewing. LoL....

It is interesting!

my jungle corn does the 'pffft' sound as well and it's quite loud...first time I heard it I couldn't believe my ears lol.

I have been hissed at once. My niece's amel was crawling around my neck when she grabbed unexpectedly. It let out a hiss right in my ear! It is cool because that's what you expect snakes to do! Sssssssssssssssssssss!

I allways wondered the same thing.

Mine have never hissed i get all the other things including getten bitin once a week but i have never heard a hiss.

Whoa! I got hissed at by a rat snake! Hehe. I was at the shop I help out in yesterday and I was changing this guy's water and he hissed. It was just like a quick spitting noise. It excited me somewhat, as I'd never heard a hiss before :crazy02:
