So I am going to get a new hatchling at the show on Mar.1 and was wondering if anybody has any pics of their 5gal hatchling setups???
I have never used a 5 gal for snakes but I have one laying in my closet, with a metal-screen lid...and instead of buying a new 10gal tank and screen top was wondering if I could just use the 5gal for a little bit...???

If anyone has any pics of theirs, and could share them that would be great!

I've never used a 5 gallon, but I would say set it up the same way as a 10 gallon just make everything smaller(hides, water bowl, heat pad), but your better off going out and buying a new one because it will out grow a 5 gallon really fast. I personally hate tanks that are smaller then 20 gallons, probably because I have a bunch of 10 gallon tanks sitting around that I can't seem to even give away, lol.
 
I've got my little Ninja in a 5 gallon tank. He's about 35g (not sure about length) and he doesn't seem "too big" for the tank just yet either. Also, he is 6 months old as of today.
All I've got in his tank is some aspen, a water bowl and an egg carton with a couple holes cut into it. I think I've got some pics somewhere......

Now that you say that, I think I remember seeing them! Maybe...I will try to search you on here and see if you have already posted them...if not, do you mind snapping a quick shot for me?

Got some photos for ya! ;)

This is what his tank looked like when I first got him... Everything in the tank was improvise because I wasn't able to get all the proper stuff just yet. The paper towel roll/toilet roll is a well known favourite and it works great :) His water bowl used to be the bottle of a water bottle and two cardboard hides...

And as you can see, Ninja loves to curl up the egg carton haha!

But this just goes to show how simple corns can live :p As long as you provide the snake with everything it needs, how you decorate (or not) the tank is completely and totally up to you! :)
 
Oh by the way, in the first pic, the things are all jumbled around because (as you may see), Ninja shedded and destroyed the organization haha
 
OK, EmJagz I did find your progression thread for Ninja (cool name by the way) and saw some pics of the egg-carton hide, very cool idea! Weren't any straight on shots of the tank...so if you have any...could you stick one up here for me? I think I am going to go ahead and use my 5gal that I have, but I would love to see your whole tank.

You know how the bug bites, and you get to looking around at pics of different morphs...it's just dang hard to make up your mind!
These are the next 3 snakes that I am definately going to get...but they aren't in any certain order, I will just be getting them as I find them for good prices :)
1. Abbott's Okeetee
2. Regular Motley
3. Either a Leucistic Texas Ratsnake or Leucistic Black Ratsnake

Again...no certain order... :)
 
Those are some super nice choices!! I've only got an albino and a snow on the list so far, as you've previously read....:D I hope to get the albino this upcoming weekend, woo!

EmJagsz how do you heat your tanks? Do you use a heat pad(do they make heat pads small enough) or light? Getting ideas this way if I ever decide to put my small tanks into use, I'll have some ideas on how to heat them.

There are heatpads I see in pet stores that are small enough to fit under the 5 gallon, but I haven't gotten around to getting one of those yet so I rely on ambient temperature for now. The ambient temp is usually a little warmer than room temp (the room the snakes are in is usually oddly warmer than the rest of the house, but I'm not complaining:D). I have not had any problems regarding temperature this way.
I'm sure you could use any means of heating that you see fit.
 
In my 10 gal tanks, I use heat lamps. I know alot of people say the dry out the air, yadda yadda...but honestly I think it is easier, and I have never had a problem with humidity.

As far as figuring out/controlling the temps...I just change the wattage of the bulb until I find one that suits the tank size. For my 10gal. I use one heat lamp on the warm end with a 60watt light in the day and a 60watt blacklight at night. This wattage sustains a perfect warm and cold temp in my house for that size tank.
I will probably do the same if/when I use that 5 gal. I will just have to try some smaller wattage bulbs to get the temps right....

I know I'm not EmJagsz but I figured I'd chime in :)

Thanks both of you, I probably wouldn't use it for a corn since I have mine in tubs but you never know what I'll bring home next, lol.
 
I have considered the heating via heat lamp multiple times. I might have to give it a little test sometime down the road and see how that works for temps, the snake and myself:D
 
No problem...I love getting help on here, and try do dish it out when I can :)

If I ever get a decent sized "corn-operation" going on at my house, I will definitely have to switch to some tubs...but for now I like my guys in the tanks, as they are more or less just pets right now, and I love observing them:)

I think if you are using a tank, they are a cheaper alternative to heat pads...cause with the heat pad, you probably need a rheostat or thermostat for the temps, whereas with the lamps, you just find the right wattage bulb for about $2 (for a 4pack)...that and they'll just sit right on the screen top...
I'm not sure if, or how one could use a lamp with a tub...but I'm sure it's been done :)
