Well turns out im allergic to the aspen.. Of course.. :headbang:
So i need something else.. My brother has an anole lizard and he uses "for all living things, Reptile bark." And it says for most snakes lizards and turtles.. So can my corn use it? My hands and wrists are all broke out and i need to find something different.. But i dont want to use newspaper.. There has to be something else right? I dont want to keep aspen if i dont have to.. My hands look horrible.. My knuckles are all red and rough and dry and my hands are all bumpy and itchy.. It pretty much sucks..
 
I use zoomed reptibark. guess that's like the reptile bark.
Not everybody likes it, but I really do. kind of a natural look I think...
 
I don't believe it will hurt her no. especially if it says reptile bark. If you buy the bark in a plant shop or something, you have to look out that there's no fertilizer in there, but if it's reptile bedding, there won't be.
Some people think bark like that has more dust in it than aspen, and rinse it first.
Other than that, I can't think of anything. I have all my corns on reptibark, never had any problems...
 
I use ZooMed Eco Carpet... It's really easy to clean. I got two rolls of it so I can take the dirty one out and put the clean one in right away. Zilla makes a similar product, (Zilla Reptile Green Terrarium Liners) and they're both available at Petsmart, though the Zilla brand is only available online, it comes in 5 different sizes and seems to be less expensive than the ZooMed product. Although there is no potential for burrowing, my snake does fine with her hides. I think as long as you have enough places for your snake to hide it will be okay if it cannot burrow in the substrate.

Some people use CareFresh. Get the unscented if you use it, it comes in scented too (for pet rodents) & I sure the scents are not good for snakes.

Shredded paper (from a crosscut shredder) might work. Does not look as nice as aspen, but is cleaner than newspaper.

I got a bag of cypress, I can't figure out quite how. One of my snakes is on that & seems to like it fine. I will probably switch that one to aspen when the cypress runs out, but it might work for you.

Edit: My snakes like to burrow so I am not sure about the carpet products but if yours doesn't burrow that might be OK too. I have read that it is REALLY hard to get poo out of it though.
 
I use carefreash beeding for mine. And it is not super dusty or anything.. it is just like paper.. soo maybe that will work

THANKS! I think that is what ill use because my brother needs it for his anole so we can just share the bag. But do you rinse yours?
 
I don't rinse no. I never had any issues with dust flying around or sticking to the snakes, so I don't have the need to rinse it. I guess you can just try it and if you find it too dusty for your liking, rinse it or try something else... If not, well no problem then :)

I used a washcloth, some Dial soap, and a little elbow grease and my carpet was poo free. :nyah: There was thorough rinsing afterward of course to remove all the soap, but it was as good as new.

Yep, I use bark as well (just generic stuff, not Reptibark). My Corns are fine with it and I only find it gets a little dusty towards the bottom of a bag.
 
Try cypress mulch.

For all that ReptiBark absorbs you might as well use marbles as substrate. It's extremely messy when a bigger snake (even an adult corn) goes to the bathroom.
 
I've never used Carefresh for my snakes, but I have for mice and I personally find it disgusting. It does absorb urine, but it smells absolutely disgusting very quickly. Fortunately, snakes don't pee nearly as often as mice, so it might not be an issue.


I'm switching to corn cob for my hedgehog. Has anyone used this for snakes?
 
I am new at this so take it into consideration. when i purchased my snake, I bought it from rays Little reptile zoo, in otatwa, and I was told to use Reptibark, and Reptile Tropical soil, made from coconut shell grinded up. It is suppose to be harmless to snakes, and it looks quite good in the viv, very natural looking. It is the type you buy in a brick form, and disolve it in hot water, once it breaks up, I mixed it with repti bark (made from fur i believe0. food for thought,

But your snake still cant burrow in carpet

?? I find it to be quite alright. The moisture is absorbed (but I do only take it out after a little while, not when it's ...eh...freshly produced), only the dry urates can leave a powdery stuff on the viv floor under the bedding. That I take out with a damp paper towel.
Maybe not perfect, but I do like it.
