Can you sex this snake?

Bubbles

We Can't All Be Smart.
well i heard you can sex snakes by there tail so i thought someone on here might be able to have a go for me if they have some time.

i no some people disagree sexing this way can be incorrect but might as well try right?

the snakes were probed when they were Young but the person who done it for me was not totally sure of the sex he expects they are both females.

anyway here are the pictures.

hope these pictures are ok to tell from if not post a message saying so and i can try get some more pictures.

thank you for reading and replying those who have.

What would really help are pictures just of the vent and tail from a few different angles. That's what everyone will look at to try and sex your snake.

Ditto!Females have got smaller tails than males,thier tails are more spindly looking.More shots please!V

i sort of have a picture of bubbles i dont no if its any good though but here it is.

i will post some pictures tonight they need to be fed today anyway so ill take some pictures befor feeding and post them.

You want to try and get the tail, as straight as possible, showing the underside from the vent to the tail-tip.

Easier said than done! :rolleyes:

As a wild guess, from the pics you did post, I'd guess male.

But, tail sexing is always a bit of a guessing game. I have one female you would swear blind was a male from looking at the tale. She was probed and sexed a female though and the eggs this year pretty much proved that out. :)

yeah it is easy said than done alright it was bloody hard lol i managed to get 1 good picture of bubbles Ryley's ones are pretty poor though anyway here they are.

If you know we may be able to sex the snake by looking at the tail, why is there hardly any pics with a tail in it? :rolleyes:

We need pics like this

<img src=http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1565&stc=1>

P.S. How's that Serp? ;)

Sorry Bubbles, we must have posted at the same time.
That is a nice male you have there.

whitch one male or both? bubbles or Ryley the top 3 are bubbles bottom 2 are Ryley i think. meh i been thinking all this time they were females lol.

yeah we did have them probed when we got them but they were at a younge age i no its not advised to but we didnt no much about corns at the time and the pet shop owner oferd to for us. he said he was not totaly sure because its a little to early for him to tell but he expected both females. but i have had suspitions.

Sexing by the tail is done by looking at the way it tapers. I believe some look at the side of the tail, but what I'm looking at is the underside of the tail. This is how I do it anyway.

In the illustration, the gray lines are identical on both sides, so you can see the differences more clearly.

With males, the tail will "stay wide" and it's usually about half the length of the tail before the angle changes, as shown by the arrow.

With females, the tail will quickly thin and the angle will change only a few scales after the vent, as shown by the arrow.

The males tend to stand out more and more as they grow up. Even at 6 months they seem a lot more obvious than they did as hatchlings.

And for the record, I never rely on it, it's somewhat dependable and it can make a good "hint" but is nowhere near foolproof, and I do probe/pop all of my corns to sex them. The other caveat is that it simply takes practice. I must have looked at hundreds of tails, trying to see it, without ever seeing it. So I would say any guess on sex without a good bit of experience behind it is probably about 50% likely to be correct. ;)

Awesome, Carol!

For these examples (correct me if I'm wrong)

Male's on top.
<img src=http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1564&stc=1>

Male's on bottom.
<img src=http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1565&stc=1>

Right?

carol, tell us the secret to getting (what looks like to me) 2 at least sub adults to stay still enough for those pics. I see you had some help, but I just tried with one at a time (for the heck of it) and they wanted no part of being up side down, even just the last third.

well thanks for that education text there Serpwidgets thats pretty cool didn't realise there would be much difference in tale shape i though it was mostly the shape of the vent or something cheers for that.

Ryley seams to look more like the female to me according to that picture and bubbles seams to look more like a male? i could be mistaken then as i am no expert first time i new there was a difference and looked. the snakes are both around 4 - 5 months old now by the way they come from the same batch.

anyway cheers carol as well for the info and help thank you all. :) :cheers:

Who says I had help? ;)
Just kidding, it took an extra pair of hands, a lot of patience, and a lot of attemps. The best way to do it was to line them up nicely while they were "right side up" and then to just flip the tails (not the whole snake) at the last moment. We also had the snakes out for a little while before we tried to get some of the "wiggles" out. Those pics are actually from a thread I posted here in 2002, I have yet to have the urge to try this again. :grin01:
