Can't go tupperware...

I'm fairly new to snake keeping and plan on getting my first, a cornsnake of course, in a few weeks. I finally convinced my wife to let me but she isn't big on the idea of keeping it in a tupperware container as so many of you suggested. She said...and I quote "If we are going to get a snake its the cage has got to look half way decent." So...I'm looking for ideas to go with besides the tupperware container. I've looked at just regular aquariums and the Vision series of habitats but they are quite pricey. Can any of you recommend a good brand of tank that will look nice all setup, provide good visiblity of the occupant and still be easy to clean and have plenty of ventilation for the snake? Also, if I decide to fork out the cash for a Vision series tank what size do you recommend for a single snake. (Might get a second some time down the road but will probably get a seperate container for it). Any help you guys can give will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

...I just got a regular aquarium, with a screentop. If you don't want to have a bit of a funny looking lamp sitting on top, a heat pad would be best, as long as it isn't too hot.
My tank has some bark stuff, as well as a few cocohuts and a waterdish that looks like a rock. (My mother needs it to be all pretty and stuff too) We stuck a real plant in there for the moment, since she can't stand the plastic stuff. She used to be a florist, you see. *sigh* Florist, and studied as an interior designer. It's hard to keep her happy. She was happy that the corn was orange, since 'it went with my decor'. Oy.
As long as you remember to set your plant out for a bit every few days, and to water it, it works.

Eh, he's about a year old and he's in a 25-gallon long. Only got him a few days ago, so he just sits in a cocohut all day.

tank solution

Hi I am new to the forum, and absolutly love it here! This place is a wealth of information and humour. This is my first snake, and I must admit, I cant see ever wanting anything but a corn again! I have had my corn for about a month now and he is doing wonderful. Anyhow back to the subject, I keep my corn at my store, and since decore and security are a big issue there, this is a great solution. It is an old converted tv ...glass on the bottom, heat pad in one corner under the glass. My corn seems to always avoid the heat, but previous owner never gave him heat from what I was told (he is 4). He has 2 hides (these are old pics the tank has been spruced up since.) Anyhow, it looks great, it is easy to clean and quite secure. The plants are all artificial. He seems a happier snake since moving to this new home also.
Thanks for all the great posts, I learn everyday how to better care for my new little friend.

The really cheap, super nice looking, hardly ever used glass aquariums lurk at the yard sales. I got a twenty gallon with screen cover and water bowl for $5.00 at a yardsale right on my street! Just go yardsailing for a couple of weeks an see what you find. A twenty gallon should be good for a corn pretty much it's entire life.

Very Nice!

I cant see ever wanting anything but a corn again!

Never say never!

Story: It all starts with a corn. Cute guy. You don't want him to be lonely though, so you get a second to keep him company. A couple of good deals on the Auction and Rich runs a 50% off sale. Now you have "several". Since you have more that one, it makes since to build a rack. Unfortunately, you build it larger that you needed to and have several open spots.......:( . Your solution: Let's go to a herp show!

Soon, the UPS guy know you by name and asks to see the "new arrival", local exotic stores are calling you for husbandry advise, and you are the "Herp of the Month" speaker at the local herp society. BTW, your lone corn has blossomed into what you now refer to as "a collection"; speckled with all sorts of rare and fancy "locale specimens" and "long-shot triple hets". You buy a second freezer to keep mice in and Saturday is now known as "snake day". One day while surfing the net you see a cute little Brazilian Rainbow Boa and think: "Hey that guy has similar temp and space requirements as corns. What a great filler for my SECOND rack!" (Oh, I haven't even mentioned lizards yet. ;) )

This is purely hypothetical of course and isn't meant to be a potrayal of anyone living or dead.....RIGHT!

Nice Shewizard..............

That is a very good idea for a display cage. I think that next time I see some of those old TV's sitting out for junk, I am going to have to try that. I have been trying to think of ways to make a nice display cage to put in my living room. Thanks for sharing that pic. Very beautiful setup. :)

Yes I have to agree the TV idea is very original. Can anyone make a comment on the Vision series of tanks? Are they worth the prices they charge for them?

Thanks.

Eh, I like the tv idea, but how do the snakes get any air? Maybe I'm just not seeing it, since I'm half-blind and unobservant...*shrug*

That's a really neat viv. I've seen fish tanks made out of old mac monitors, but that converted TV is too cool! I guess I'll have to start looking for an old cabinet TV to modify.

there are air holes and lots of em, drilled at the base of the walls as well as in the lid, hard to see in the pic though :)
