can't hurt a animal....help please

A note on dry ice/co2 euth with pinkies...they are extremely resistant to higher CO2 levels. You would have to leave them for much longer times, perhaps 10 to 15 minutes, or they could "wake back up".

Well ya'll gave me your advice so i thought i would let you know how it went. All though my boyfriend didn't want to thump him either he seen how it pained me to do it myself and that i was scared to feed live so he thumped him for me. Took the snake a while before he showed interest but he did eat it and next time i will be ready and have my f/t. So the night ended well , my Dayoh ate like a champ as he always does and my new bp ate his first meal with me and i managed to learn a few things. All is well in this snake lovers world. Thanks ya'll for your help , i do appreciate every ones comments and advice.

lol...you know, I just got done reading through the replies that were made since I posted on this thread this afternoon and I've realized something. As snake owners, we must have a real soft spot for the mice. They're necessary to keep the snakes alive, yet some people here don't want to kill them. There's nothing wrong with that, but keep reading and you'll see where I'm headed with this...

In the 2 or 3 weeks I've had my snake, I've had several people at school say something to the effect of "I'll get you a mouse (hamster, kitten, gerbil, rat, etc) at the pet store so your snake can eat it." Forget the fact half of those don't even make sense when you're talking about a corn snake, it just amazes me at how badly some of these people want to see something die! lol

Life is a cruel existence sometimes. The reality of the situation is that you have chosen to provide for a creature that requires a 'specialized' diet. You can't just rush out and buy yourself some chicken stri . . . I mean granola bars to feed it. The reality is that your pet eats living things in the wild (of course dogs once did too).

We have adjusted our husbandry techniques by offering f/t prey in order to alleviate the 'survival of the fittest' code. In nature if the mouse kills the snake we don't know about it, but in captivity if the mouse kills the snake, were out $$. (That's the reality of it really, I know, were attached to them for other reasons as well!)

The two best methods in my experience are thumping and C02 from dry ice. A third that I employ, but takes some practice is to place a butter knife behind the neck (not to cut, just to hold the mouse down) and quickly jerk from the tail. Snaps the neck and is quick. Problem is it takes practice, you can draw your own mental picture if you happen to pull too hard. (Also, this doesn't work too well with rats!)

Now, I have killed many, many mice and rats. I believe strongly in an occassional prekilled live meal, and won't debate it here. The point is, I don't feel cold and heartless, it's a necessity of life. I have also killed many many deer, pheasant, doves, ducks, rabbits, etc. I don't feel as though I'm cold and heartless. I respect the 'life' that nature has to offer, and the reality of life is that we need to feed. When killing deer etc. I am providing food for my family. When killing mice I am providing food for my other 'family'. I don't cry over my actions, but I have learned to respect the life lost in order for another to live. Don't know if this information or 'sharing' will affect your willingness to 'suck it up', but hope that maybe you'll give it a shot. It's very quick and 'painless' if you do it right.

EDIT After posting my comments, I noticed there was a second page, and you got your BF to thump the mouse for you. Great job! I left all my other comments cause I still felt they were pertinent.

ohhh im sure they through them in a bag and put them in the freezer, i went to kill a mouse the other day by flicking it and it shot out of my hand and hit the wall then floor, that did it, so maybe find a hard walla nd throw the mouse at it hahahaha im kidding hows that for a cruel joke (the mouse really did go flying and hit the wall though). yeah just a little smack ot the head will do it just with any small blunt object.

mouse trap

you could get a mouse trap at a hardwear store. i think they cost around $0.50each. and you could try killing it that way instead of puting it in a freezer or bag. that way you would not have to do the killing the mouse trap could do it for you.

dtodd, you do realize that a simple mouse trap does NOT kill a mouse right away normally. Yeah, the occasional snap of it might sever the neck but most times the mouse lives and can live for some time if it is not badly "damaged" with the springing of the trap. I used to use them years ago to get rid of mice in the attic of my old farm house but stopped using them because I did not like to listen to mice flopping around in the traps trying to get loose. I felt horrible putting them through that. Most of the mice flopped around for up to an hour and some were alive half a day later when I went up to remove the "dead" mouse. So, no, I would definitely consider that a cruel method of killing the mouse. Putting it in a bag and thumping it on the table dispatches the mouse immediately. And CO2ing it also is the "human" way to kill it.

I think what you're all forgetting here is that mice get killed by snakes in the wild every day. It's illegal to feed a live mouse to a snake in the UK, but I just don't understand why. They'll be making it illegal for foxes to chase rabbits next...
But anyway, that's not my point. Mice die everyday, painfully, it's a fact of life and we can't stop it happening (in the wild anyway). I'd dispatch a mouse if I had to, and wouldn't feel much guilt doing it because I know they're dying more painfully all over the place out in the wild, I just thought you might think of that first. Then again I've never come across a situtation where I'd have to kill a mouse, so I might react differently.
Sorry if this offends anyone, I put it as best as I could and re-wrote alot of it LOL.
