Cardboard on heat mat?

Plissken

Crazy Snail Lady
Hey everyone, just a quick question,

It's been a really hot week here and I turned Connor's heat mat off, but today the temperature has plummeted and as he's digesting his food right now I turned the mat back on. But he's started burrowing under the paper substrate and I'm worried he'll get burned. It was originally my plan to place some cardboard inside the tank, under the substrate, to keep the heat down, but I don't want to disturb Connor just after he's eaten ripping his home apart, so instead I put the cardboard under the tank, on the heat mat. I just wanted to check that this is safe and there's no possibility of a fire or anything dramatic like that. :grin01:

Thanks!

One solution that has been talked about alot on this site is to attach your UTH to a piece of ceramic tile. Then the tile is against the glass of the viv. This spreads out the heat more evenly and avoids the chance of burning your snake. On my viv, I placed the UTH on the side of the tank as opposed to the bottom of the tank. I have had no problems what-so-ever with heating. I am sure some others will chime in with other options.

I'd have thought it would be safe if you've got the heat mat on a thermostat... but if the mat isn't on a 'stat, then I wouldn't risk it personally. But then again... I wouldn't risk having a mat without a stat -anywhere-.

What are your temps directly on the tank floor, above the heatmat? If you haven't got a thermostat or rheostat, try raising the tank up a couple more cm off the mat. Putting anything directly on the mat could make it overheat and pose a fire risk, or cause the glass to crack (or so I've read) Hope that helps

As a temporary measure, it will be ok until he finishes digesting. Don't leave it there long term, though.
