CareFresh as bedding?

Awhile back a pet store employee told me (I know, I know) that CareFresh would be a good option to use as bedding for my girlfriend's corn snake. I was impressionable and clueless and took them for their word. Is this a potential health risk to the snake?

I personally think that CareFresh is a poor bedding for most things.

It was reccomended to me for my hedgehog and chinchilla, over aspen. My mother also used it for her cavy. I have found that when wet, it crumbles, and the mess created then sticks to toes and gets into fur and feet. It is also, to me, incredibly dusty, and I wouldn't want my snakes with their rather sensitive respiratory systems digging in it.

It makes sense that a pet store employee would reccomend it, of course-- it's $20 for the largest bag of carefresh, which isn't all that large, and $13 or cheaper for the largest bag of aspen, which will last almost forever.

Personally, I'd change to aspen.

What about mice? I use a combo of carefresh/aspen in their nest, then all aspen in the rest of the cage.

I agree that it's probably too dusty for snakes. They like to burrow, so they would be inhaling the dust constantly. Aspen is also a MUCH cheaper alternative!

I just this morning read an article about different bedding for mice. The one thing that surprised me was that care fresh (after one week of use) had the highest levels of ammonia.

Really?? That's too bad. I have a whole bag of it, too. I just figured it would be nice and cozy soft for the babies. I'll probably finish the bag because I clean the cage every other day. After that, nuttin' but Aspen. Thanks, Wade!

Just thought I'd kick in my two cents, being a pet store manager I actually don't like Carefresh for most animals and tell my employees to steer people towards Aspen. Carefresh is bleached and dyed, maybe I'm just a bit too protective of my animals at home and at work but I don't like that combination if its used alot, used sparingly it might be ok but I still prefer Aspen personally.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. Looks like I'll be switching to aspen pretty soon. Thanks for the advice guys.

I used it for my large boa once when the store here was out of all but pine or carefresh and he had dumped his waterbowl. I only used it for about a week...and it was Eh. Clumped up, was dusty, and just did not have that fresh smell aspen has. So I scooped it out and got the aspen right away. Worked okay for an emergency though and was better than pine.
