hello all, the new england reptile expo is coming up and i'm trying to decide if i want a jungle carpet python, irian jaya carpet, or a ball python. i've had experience with snakes before, and i'm just wondering which would you recommend? Also, does anyone know how much a carpet python is?

I would recommend the one you like best. The one youconnect with the most...
I got all three of them, and they are all different. Even the balls are different to each other!
Carpets like to be out and climbing. Balls like to shy away.
The only thing I will say is, JCP like to play hard to get when you get them out. They will grow out of it and grow back into it, sometimes...LOL. But you expect that...Obviously there will be variations in all snakes behavior....

I would say get an IJ, they are a little bit friendlier and more forgiving then Jungles, and also, not as boring as BP's

yeah, i was leaning more towards an Irian Jaya...well do you know or have an estimate of how much it'll cost?

I have raised JCP and compaired to Ball Pythons they will grow huge. Be aware of that. JCP will hit 10 to 12' easy. Mine were very friendly but if they had decided to bite, it would have been nasty. They have very long teeth and lots of them.

I'm going too!! :D

i would suggest the jungle (my personal fav. looking)
but the IJ aren't as temperamental.

Yea, I want to know exactly what your talking about, :bang: An Eight foot jungle is considered large... you will never find a 10 or 12 foot Jungle,

Even coastals rarely get to twelve feet, and there the biggest SPP..

Confused? or?

There's a picture of a 10 foot+ jungle floating around on the internet. I can't remember who's website it is on and for the life of me I can't find it now.

I missed all this bash Wade thread. My female JCP is 9' long. She is 5 years old. She will hit 10' before she is done. My snake room has a 10' ceiling. I hung up one of her sheds and it was probably 14' long. NS.... really.

Wade - Maybe they're being sarcastic. It is April 1......

I found that picture. Obvioiusly its not my pic.

That's Will Leary, and if I remember correctly, his huge female "Rebekah".

I have several jungles, and none of my adults are anywhere near that size. Treesa, the final decision is up to you, of course. I love the vivid coloring of the jungles, but that's just my opinion. I don't own any IJs or BPs, but I'm sure their owners love them for their own merits.

As far as pricing, it varies considerably. Do you just want one for a pet, or are you looking for breeder-quality animals? My jungles all have different temperaments. My babies and a couple of the juveniles are a bit nippy, but my adults are all mellow, except at feeding time.

well i'm not experienced at breeding snakes so i'm just looking for one as a pet. I'm leaning towards the IJ but i do love the jungle's colors. who knows what this weekend will bring!! oh and i'm kind of confused now, so do IJ's get to be 12'?

No, most IJs grow to be between 5 to 6 feet in length, and are generally regarded to be one of the smallest subspecies of Carpet python. I have an IJ myself, and she's lovely. Fantastic temperament (she's 2 months old, I've had her a month and not a single strike), great feeder and lovely colours. I'd highly recommend one, just make sure you do your research now :) There's not a huge gap in the care requirements of the various subspecies, but there are some differences, so try to make up your mind soon ;)

Wade, I don't think anyone was bashing you, they just found it difficult to accept what was said. I had never heard of a 12ft JCP before, but I'm open to the idea. Look at humans, the average human height is 5.5ft, but sometimes we do get the very rare instance of someone being 8ft+. Who's to say that every single Carpet python in the World has been uncovered and looked at, so we know that there's no Carpet python, anywhere, that's above 8ft in length. They haven't. I don't believe the picture has been Photoshopped Joel, but I do agree with you in the fact that Carpets are being crossed a lot.

All the best

David

Dave, You're a nice guy, I don't think I was being bashed either. I was just talking. I gotta be more careful about that.

There is a really great book called Pythons of the World, by Dave and Tracy Barker. It is apparently out of print or has been replaced by "Vol 2" which is still available. Anyway the cover of the book has a picture of a JCP on it which is the father of my female. Which means nothing, I just like to tell people that.

In the book, Dave says they grow to 250 cm. That's about 10 feet. I'm pretty sure mine will make that size.

Ok, so I'm standing in the shower and it hits me, wait a minute, 250 cm is more like 8' not 10. Sorry, I misspoke.
