Catproofing and pine

Hi all,

So put a piece of pine on foam on top of the screen top to my corn's viv (to keep the cat out). I know pine as a substrate isn't good, but is there any problem having the pine near the snake?

If it's a pine log I would sa no. If it's a pine board from a lumber yard it would be kiln-dried so you should be fine. Over all tho, I would look for another way to keep the cat of of the screen lid.

Just out of curiosity, have you noticed if it causes stress for the snake to be watched by the hungry eyes of a feline? Before we took her, our snake was plagued by a puppy that loved to get her so worked up she'd strike at him through the plastic.

Well when the snake sees the cat (about 1/3 of the time the cat tries to go up there) she'll either ignore the cat, or seems rather inquisitive. I'm sure it helps that the cat only watches the snake, and doesn't try to physically get into the viv.

The biggest thing I'm worried about isn't stress, but rather the cat falling through the screen top. I can't imagine that they could hold much weight.

Cool! Glad the cat hasn't tried to eat her! Does the snake still get decent air flow with the pine on top of the screen?

I had the board sitting about an inch off the screen top, so I think so. Although, I did move the board to block the cat's path to the tank, so now it's not an issue. I'm just holding off on getting a real stand for the viv since I'm moving in a month or so
