Cleaning a VIV?

SunnyCorn

No Soup For You!!
Just wondering how offten do you clean a snakes VIV? I clean mine ever week and a half. Should I be cleaning it every week instead?:shrugs: Thanks.

Ok then, and what I do, is that I take the snake out and let my sister hold him, shes the only one I trust with him, and take out all of his hides and fake plants and water dish, and take out the aspen, and set it aside. Then take the tank outside and scrub it down with windex. I heard other people useing something else but I jsut cant find those posts.

What do you use? And should I be throwing away the aspen instead of going through it and taking out the poops, then putting it back in the tank.

After I wash it down with lots of water to make sure I got the windex stuff off, I try it then leave it out in the sun for awhile to let it warm up. Then wash his fake plants and dry them, then replace the water. THEN place everything back in and go get Sunny and place him back in.

Now....any advise and please correct me with ANYTHING i'm doing wrong, I woudl like to know so I can correct them. :D

Thanks!

We use a bleach water solution. 1 part bleach 10 parts water. When we spot clean we tkae out only the poop and all that. When its month time cleaning we clean out everything. hides, bowls, viv. everything. Every month change out the whole aspen bedding.

If anyone wants to add something please do.

you guys are crazy for using chemicals.

i use vinegar and water....it disenfects just as well, and its not toxic....

I do the same thing. I, too use bleach (1/10). I rinse the tanks first with hot water and then soak it in bleach and water. Then rinse the tanks very well with hot water. I do the same thing with the hides, bowls and fake plants.

I will sometimes put bleach in a (very well labled) spray bottle with water to clean the tanks.

We use antibacterial dishwashing liquid

We just use an antibacterial dishwashing liquid. I fill a bowl with warm water and mix the dishwashing detergent in it then clean every nook and cranny of his tank then rinse it really well in hot water, dry it off and put his aspen back in. We clean his hide, water dish and decorations the same way.

I just don't see the need for harsh chemicals or vinegar since, :shrugs: we wash our hands with antibacterial soap after handling them, prior to feeding them to remove scent and before handling, to clean anything off our hands we may have on them from cleaning the house or other stuff? :shrugs: So it seems to me, it would be logical to use the same thing to clean his viv.

No one persons choice is right or wrong, it just suits their way of doing it. So you can really just pick what works for you based on ideas of what other folks do, or create your own as long as it's safe. :wavey:
