cleaning asf cages

combining

I would do one of two things either put the younger females in with the older couple or.. Take the male away from older female then put the two younger females in with her. This way they can sort out dominance with out the pressure of the male around. You can put him back in the next day.

You are right to be concerned about night time as they are much more active then. Also do not change things too much in setup to start till they all settle in.

There is a forum just for ASF. http://asfrats.info/index.php This is a good place to get more info on these guys. I have only been working with them a year like most since they are really new to the US market. From what I gather no more can be imported and many states have a ban on them.

all 4 asf together now

Just wanted to let you all know I put the larger female in with the small female on the 17 or 18 then introduced the male the next day now all four are in a 35gal high tank. all seem to be going well but the larger 2 have become body guards for the smaller ones at least with the larger tank I can clean half at a time I was handling the smaller ones till they had bodyguards lol. I find it is amazing how slow the growth was then in the past 2 weeks the older 2 just shot right up they are like 2x the size of the mice. Im feeding a millet mixture small bird, mouse and gerbil feed Have had the pig formula on order for a while and still waiting. and had this idea to feed degu feed anyone else try this? My mice wow what a stink YUCK. I have aspen, carefresh, corncob and a couple other beddings to see what keeps the smell down. Cleaning cages every 4 days with the ones without babies. I think Im causing the male to mark his territory more than necessary but I cant help it the stench.

I've found pelleted bedding to work the best at keeping mouse odor down. Pelleted newspaper, pelleted aspen, alfalfa pellets, all work well. The best for the money is hardwood wood stove pellets from Menards at $4 for 40 lbs, when they're in season.

Seriously that would be great Ill have to go get some. I used the stove pellets for my netherland rabbits litter boxes back when I was breeding them. Om in Northern Ontario never heard of Menards but I think I even have some left in the shed and I can try the place I useto get them from anything toxic with wood pellets that I should stay away from?. Ill be cleaning cages again tomorrow.

Definitely no cedar and try to avoid pine or any softwoods if possible, though pine in a pellet isn't too bad as most of the toxic oils have been processed out.

Menards is a home improvement super-store like Home Depot or Lowes. The wood pellets I got there are premium hardwood pellets, excellent for mouse litter, and much cheaper than pellets marketed for animal bedding.
