cleaning, cleaning, cleaning....

I have been using mild hand soap to clean my water dish roughly every other day. Every day, if it "looks" dirty or has aspen in it. I wash it really well, and then rinse for what my students say "is a long time," like 3-5 minutes, and then dry it out. Finally, I fill it with dechlor water, and then replace. I also do this with my amphibians, to no ill effect. And amphibians are tremendously sensitive to soaps and other detergents.

I think I will look into some Chlorhexidine too. I've changed his tank once (end of last month) and will do so again this week, but wasn't sure what to clean with, so I used vinegar and water.... I like the sound of Chlorhexidine better! And the shop vac idea is a great idea.

Will agree that soaps are DEFINITELY detrimental to aquarium fish. So keep that stuff away from your tanks! :)
