Cleaning

Nomed

Aimez le monstre.
I'm moving my baby to a new tank that used to have fish in it and it sat in my garage for like 2 years. Anyway i have a few questions on cleaning it.
I know you are supposed to use a 3% bleach solution but how much is that in something like oz.?

is there anything i can use instead like 409?
How often should i change the bedding? Right now im changing it every two weeks..

please help!

thanks in advance,
Nomed

I've never found that you need to be really extra super precise with bleach solution as long as you clean up well enough. Don't use a whole lot of bleach, but as long as you've diluted it to the point just beyond where you can smell it, it still does a fair job of cleaning. Then when you're done, rinse it well and let it dry completely (even if you've towel dried it, let it air out for awhile). I clean my vivs and water bowls this way and haven't had a problem.

2 weeks sounds good for the bedding unless it's soiled

I was told that the best thing to use was Sunlight Origianl dish liquid. I talked to a few ppl in my area that got snakes and that is what they use. been using it for years. But it got to be the ol original. the yellow one.

i only completely change the substrate in my vivarium every month or so, with spot cleans on any poops etc. in the meantime. every 2 weeks sounds kind of obsessive :grin01: the vivarium is still super clean doing it once a month

haha its a good time to have a sinus infection then. I cant smell squat! LOL

Thanks for the help everyone :]]

A good rule of thumb is to do about 1/3 a cup of bleach and the rest water. I have even heard of peopel rubbing the bleach stright on to the glass then filling the tank up with water. Not sure how that works but they seem to be happy with it and their fish are alive and well.
