Cloudy eyes come and go...

Hi again,

I have a question. I have noticed something odd (at least to me) ever since I have kept snakes. We had a bull snake for a short period of time as well as having corn snakes right now and we have noticed the exact same behaviour. When they go "blue" eventually their eyes will get cloudy... then as soon as the eyes go back to normal, they feed, and then they shed... what is up with that? Do the eye scales come off first before the rest of their skin? If so, then how come it looks like they are still there when I clean out their skin from their tank... there is always an eye scale connected to the rest of the skin like normal.. what would make the eye go from cloudy, to uncloudy before the shed... it just doesn't make sense to me that the cloudiness would go away without having lost that old scale... thanks!

That's just what it does. The cloudiness is a result of a substance going between the two layers to help seperate it for the shed. When it goes back to normal it's done preparing to seperate, but it still needs to be pulled loose from the old scales during the shedding process.

Wow, really? Crazy. It's a substance filling the scale, not an old scale itself. That makes sense I guess... Thanks!

The substance is ~between~ the new skin and the old skin (not filling the scale/s)... to aid in the shedding of the old skin.

Shedding process:

- First .. as it approaches the time to shed, the snake's skin colors/patterns become dulled.
- Second .. the snake reaches the blue (or opaque) stage ... this is when the eyes cloud up (due to the build up of the substance, between the new & old skin, that aids in the separation/shedding of the old skin) and the skin colors/patterns are really dull (non Amel & non Hypo snakes may look darker as well ... by a little bit or considerable darker).
- Third .. the snake clears up (looking normal, or near normal, again .. with clear eyes).
- Fourth .. after clearing up, the snake will shed its old skin anywhere from 2-4 days later or up to a week later (sometimes longer).
