Considering Breeding Mice

Rave

New member
So i have an old 10 gallon aquarium with a lid (no lock)
I was thinking of getting 2 mice and hoping they breed M/F. I'll pick up some food(mice kibble) and use my snakes aspin bedding for them(maybe aspin with eucaliptis to reduce smell).
If i do this, -first off any tips on this kind of set up.
-how often can i expect pregnacy
-types of mice to get (local petstore varieties, I'll go to a few to find M/F)

at the moment it is only a consideration, but i'd like some other peoples thoughts on this.

I don't think having eucalyptus would be a good idea for the mice. There is a possibility that the bedding could be ingested and I know eucalyptus oil is toxic to many animals and humans when ingested. I like Carefresh Ultra because it is soft and absorbs odors. Gestation in mice lasts about 20 days, so once they do start having babies, expect them every 20 days. The main problem that people have with their mice producing is not having them in a quiet, private location where they can feel relaxed. Also, make sure the females are eating enough protein.

I would also go ahead and get a snap lock or something for the lid of th3e tank, or put some heavy books on it. Mice can climb up the water bottle or use the wheel, etc to get to the top and maybe pop the top off and escape.

The best advice I can give you is to google mice breeding or look for the search feature on this site and use it. I know this sounds mean but it is all here all you have to do is look.

P.S. Mice stink no matter what.

As fatman pointed out mice have a strong odor. If your doing this for food make sure to do some research on it. Mice gestation is between 26-28 days. Do not know how many critters your gonna feed but as a general rule I use a colony per snake or 2 colonies (colonies of 1 male to 3-4 females) per 3 snakes pending on the size of your snake. And always have extra frozen for those between times. Freeze the size you need and get an extra container to raise weanling in. If you go for it, good luck.

Buzzy, I thought mice were 18-21 days and rats 21-23 days.

Either way, Rave. Mice have something like 6-12 babies per litter, so figure out how many you have, count on each female having 8 every three weeks, and get the number of mice you need from there. Color doesn't matter. You SHOULD be able to just toss a few mice in a tank with bedding (just use pine or PetCo's pine/fir/spruce mix, something cheap), food (cheap dog food with no dyes works), water, and maybe a hide box or chew stick and you SHOULD have lots of babies.

I did everything right for 5 months and got NOTHING but stink. I prefer my Norway rats. :3

I hate to not back up Buzzard, however in the mouse book I have it says that "gestation, period of house mice and their domesticied colored relatives usually lasts 18 to 24 days."

The two rat books say 21 to 23 days of gestation for rats.

I believe your right I was off a few days. I just did a search to confirm but what is strange is my records show about 30 days between births of my females( colred females, ikeep track off due to some awesome colors I am getting) anyhow you should expect about a litter a month , per female, in a colony system. However it doesn't always work that way. Murphy loves to rear his head up now and again.

Hey Buzzard,

Your records sound to be dead on. You only forgot that if the male does not mate with the female right after she gives birth. She does not come into heat for another week so the next birth would be about 28 to 30 days by my bad math skills.

So your records are 100 percent correct.
