Controlling Humidity

stragen

~~~~~~~~
I have read in various places that humidity for corns should be around 50% or so, but i am having trouble getting it that low in my Viv.
Currently in my Viv it is about 60% but i have seen it as high as 70% before.
Admittedly i am using one of the exo-terra circular hygrometers which ive heard are notoriously inaccurate.....I am getting a digital thermometer/hygrometer soon so I will be able to monitor them better, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to lower the humidity? Would putting in another vent help, as there is currently only 1... and would this cause problems with the temperature? Temps at the moment are 75-85.
Also, Is 60% - 70% humidity OK but not ideal, or will it cause harm to my snake?
Many Thanks in advance for any help :)
I have the opposite problem. I keep my corn in a screen top aquarium and have trouble keeping the humidity high enough. I have to keep the top about 3/5ths covered by a plastic sheet and the cage misted
(never wet) occassionally.
Since humidity escapes by rising, it would be best to open your top up in some manner.
Heat also rises. So it will be sort of a balancing act. You may decrease humidity by opening the top in some manner. This may also lower your temp. So you may have to increase the heat source. If you are using a heat lamp, it may be as simple as replacing your current buld with one of slightly higher wattage.
60% humidity isnt a bad thing really, you will never have a shed problem. As for it being to high, I would think this humidity is fine. It can't really effect your snake in anyway that I'm aware of. My ball python actaully needs 60-65% humidityat all times. I dont keep hygrometers in my corn tanks so I don't know what they are. But I have had my oketee for 4 years and never had a problem.
Thanks SkyChimp - I have a wooden Viv with sliding glass doors so its not really practical to open up the top in any way... im thinking maybe a 2nd vent somewhere at the top? Would the warm end, or another one in the cool end be best? (so the temp doesnt escape?)
Shogun - thats good to hear it wont be a problem :) thanks for your reply.... i was mostly worried about the possibility of respiratory infections or similar. I will probably put another vent in anyway - want to make everything just perfect for him ;)
I agree, 60% isn't bad. Well within the range of normal.
If you must lower it, I'd put a small vent at either end. It's going to have to let some heat escape, or the humidity won't escape with it. I'd start with small vents then monitor the humidity with your current heat source. Balance as needed.
Too high of humidity can lead to respiratory problems, but 60% is within the ambient temp of corn's normal range in the wild. A second vent won't hurt, but you may need to adjust your heating a little to make up for it.
