Converting From Frozen To Live

Spitfire

Snakeless
I have cornsnake had been fed twice so far and both times were frozen. My friend feeds his live and says it's a lot easier. Does anyone know if there is anyway to convert a frozen eating snake to a live eating?

I don't know what your friend considers "easier," but the vast majority of people who own cornsnakes try to get their animals to go from live to frozen/thawed, not the other way around. There is no real benefit to feeding live prey, and there are some dangers involved, especially once larger prey is introduced.

I would advise against your trying to switch your pet to live prey. I would also suggest you might think about getting yourself a copy of the "Corn Snake Manual" by Kathy Love. You might even get one for your friend while you're at it.

;)

yooo wen i first got my snake i was like yeahhh ill just feed it live coz u know the whole '' this is gona be cool'' ****....so then my snake started to get bigger and i had to get bigger mice and one day i threw in a live one as usualy so my snake bit it in its ass and the mouse turned around and bit my snakes eye but fortunately i was there to stop the mouse from takin its eye out .....u know wat i had to doa/?? i had to stick a pencil in the mouse's mouth until he ran out of breath....i really dnt think u wanna do that buddy coz its not a pleasant site just stick with the frozen mice thts wat i do....and its not easier thats dumb hows it easier wen u have to make sure the snake bits the mouse's mouth??? ........watever take ur own risk im just trynna make u think 2wice

I have to strongly agree with the others. There were times when I wasn't sure who the blood splatter had come from because the mouse or rat go his teeth around one of my guys. Stick to F/T.

Also, not that I should be telling you this, there shouldn't be anything special you have to do to get him/her to eat live. It's a very very strong instinct and nature has a tendency to take care of itself. Only going from live to frozen requires some work, you are definitely in a great position.

Good luck.

I've fed mine live food, but she's not up to mice with teeth yet. When that happens, I will either go fresh killed, or f/t. I don't think she'll have any problem with taking them as she is a super good eater. She's never refused a meal, even before shed.

All of mine except for 1 will eat F/T (42 out of 43...not bad). I have one stubborn cal king who insists on eating live. Her last meal was quite bloody. It' was VERY frightening. I have tried for 2 years to get her switched over, but she has not been cooperative. I would like to add, if you do decide to switch to live, then please NEVER leave the mouse in with your snake unless you are sitting there watching them. A mouse can kill a snake. I have had to try to help save many snakes brought into our clinic after a mouse or rat caused serious damage to the snake.

Can you stun or fresh kill the mice you feed your King, Terri? I know that's what my friend did when his snakes got up to biting size prey.

Nope...I've tried that, too. It works once in a while, but I've had to freeze many mice in the past after trying to feed stunned or fresh killed. Then I had to turn around and offer her a live mouse. It just not consistent enough...

I just got mine to feed on a F/T, and take it from me this was a LOT easier. Both for the snake and my peace of mind.

i wud advise against live prey as the snake has a risk of harm from attack/self defence.

p.s. whats an F/T?

(im new to this site)

The other reason to feed F/T is $$$$
At the local pet shop I pay $1.60 for a large fuzzy/small hopper . I buy 50 frozen hoppers for 17$ at the reptile shows or online.I have one snake that wont eat F/T .I sure wish he would!!!!!

Most people just thump it's head on the edge of a table or something. Not very appealing, but quick. I was thinking of getting one of those mouse traps that electrocute them. It runs on two D batteries, and kills them instantly. If mine won't eat f/t, I might go to that, but she's such a good eater, I think she'll do fine.
