Cooling tubs?

Hey guys, I just finished my snake rack, and just have a couple test tubs in it right now, no snakes yet, and I noticed the cool side is not a whole lot cooler than the warm side.. It's only like maybe 2 degrees cooler. I was wondering what are some good ways to get the cool side a little cooler? Could drilling some more holes in the front help maybe? Thanks if you can help!

Keep in mind that it is still summer for us in the USA, so there shouldnt be much difference in temps.

In fact, my racks have their heat off for now. The cooler the ambient temps in your home are the more of a difference you will see.

But to be safe...what are you running your temps at right now?

I just set my thermostat up last night, and just set it to 90 degrees, I know I might need to tweek it a little. With the heat tape at 90 degrees inside the tubs are about 83 degrees on the warm side, and like 81 degrees on the cool side. I do not have a water bowl in there yet though. That might make it a little cooler on the cool side.

When you need the heat later on, you might want to set the stat for 85ish for the warm end. 90 is their maximum safe temp, so I like to leave some wiggle room at the top end.

But he says the warm side of the tub is 83, the tape outside the tub is 90 but the corns can't touch this. Or am i getting confused? (Probably i am :dunce: )

No atmox you are right. Sorry I thought I was more clear about it, guess not lol. The heat tape is set to 90 degrees. The warm side of the tub only gets about 83 degrees, and the cool side with out a water bowl right now is about 81 degrees. Also I was thinking about putting some other colubrids in the rack, probably a lot of kings, milks, and hogs, That would be fine right?

So what do you guys think? Do you think its a good temp right now? I have been looking up temps and it says usually 75-80 on the cool side, and 80-85 on the warm side. Would 83 on the warm side, and 80-81 on the cool side be good for summer? Then it probably lowering a few degrees on the cool side in the winter. I have a couple baby garter snakes that would like to put in the tub asap, but wont until I know all the temps are good and everything.

If it were me, I would edge the warm side up to between 85 and 87 degrees. They will appreciate the extra few degrees in the 24 hours just after eating. As others have already mentioned you will see less difference between sides in the summertime.

The cool side will drift up and down with the seasons. As long as your house is not up over 90 in the summer or unusually cold in the winter you will be fine...

Thanks Scott. Yeah my house stays a good temp all year around. So it's okay if the cool side is close to the same. Like I sad, I had a feeling I would need to bump the thermostat up a little more anyway. I just wanted to make sure the cool side was okay. And other colubrids like kings and milks would be good at that temp to right? The rack will actually be holding mostly kings.

You're welcome, and yes, those temps will also work fine for kings and milks...

Si I boosted my thermo to 93 last night. Today when I checked, my adult tubs are good. They are about 84-85 on the warm side. And mid 70's on the cool side. The baby tubs dont get as cool on the cool side though.. The warm side is about 84-85, but then the cool side is only like 82... You guys said thats okay for the summer time though right?
