My cornsnake has recently decided to spend all his time in his waterdish. I can't see any mites. His temp is 86.4 under the hot hide, about 74 ambient temp for the cooler side. Wood chip type substrate, can't remember the maker right now. The only difference I can figure out is the furnace is on more now, and it is dry here. My worry is - is near constant soaking bad for him? Anything else I should check? Thanks.
 
I'm no expert on corn snakes as I just got my first one two weeks ago, but what I have been reading it may mean he's shedding? Maybe you should look into that.
 
you mentioned "Wood Chip" substrate......

1). Make sure it's not any kind of Pine or Cedar. That is toxic to snakes.

2). Also, snakes soak if the humidity is too low. Do you have a humidity gauge? If not you should probably get one. Corn snake humidity should stay between 40% and 60% - Except when they are ready to shed. You can boost it a bit during shed times. Which brings me to my next point .......

3). You snake may be getting ready to shed.
 
Constant soaking can be bad, but I've never had that problem so others may have more info for you on that.

If you are concerned about humidity, get a plastic food storage container of a size your snake will be cozy in and cut a hole twice the diameter of your snake in the lid. Sand any rough edges on the hole. Take sphagnum moss and wet it. Squeeze out all the extra water so the moss is just damp. Put the moss loosely in the container. Put the lid on. Place in the viv.

Here's a pic of mine. This particular one has been snake approved. :D Make sure there is no standing water in the bottom.

I think you guys might be right - I spilled some water on his substrate tonight as I was giving him fresh water and now he's out of the bowl lying on the moist substrate. Guess I'll be making a humidity hide, thanks everyone!:)
