Hi, everyone
I want to get a Corn snake, but someone told me Grey Rats are better. I just want to know what's the difference? Is there?

Francois:D

All I know about grey rat snakes is that they can live about 25 years and get to be about 7 feet at max. I only know of one color morphe and that is light oak which looks pretty much the same as normal. Go with the cornsnake I would say.

I cannot imagine any benefit to having a grey rat as a pet that cannot be duplicated and/or surpassed by the corn snake (unless your only goal to pet ownership is to have a seven foot snake)! Now, when you then take into consideration the variableness of the corn's coloration and pattern mutations, the contest is "no contest" after all. At least, not in my opinion!

Well rat snakes and corn snakes are actually very close relatives to each others. In fact a corn snake is a sub category of a rat snake.

If you ask the people here.....the answers would definately be biased.....as this is actually a corn snake forum....

I would say that a rat snake and a corn snake, I would preferablily choose a corn snake. Firstly, I don't really like the eyes of a rat snake. Secondly, corn snakes has more morph variations in them. Well rats have a lot of different morphs too but then corns has more. Thirdly, corn snakes are known to be a bit more tame compared to a rat snake. Forthy, corns are smaller in length wise compoared to rats. Rats around 6-7 feet and corns around 4-6 feet. But then 6 feet for corns is really abnormal already.

I would think that you are a beginner at this snake stuff right? If I am wrong, then why don't you just choose the one that you look by apprearance. Some of the rat snakes looks really nice, like the mandarin rats and rhino rats are super nice (in my opinion). But if you are new to snakes, a corn is more prefered as they are known to be tame and docile and are also known as 'beginner snakes'.

Hope this helped and tell us what you got at the end.

Good Luck and Happy Herping!
Also welcome to the herp society if you are new! :D

I have a corn and a Japanese rat so i feel that i can know the differences. As Simon said: corn snakes ARE ratsnakes. I don't like Grey ratsnakes but i feel that my Japanese rat is just as pleasant to keep as my corn as these particular two are very similar (both 4ft on average, nice to handle, i don't know about morphs in a Japanese rat but as for corns, i have a normal/okeetee and think it is the best looking and most natural) so i think that THIS poll for a grey ratsnake means a corn is better to keep i agree but as for other ratsnakes.....
