hi everyone.
i know this forum is a corn snake forum only. but i was just watching some videos on you tube of ball pythons. and i was thinking....(not that i want one)......but what are ball pythons tempremant like compared to corn snakes? they look pretty mean! lol also beutiful though! :) do they like to be handled a lot and stuff? are they more aggressive?
just curious.

Ball pythons are much calmer, slower and placid than corn snakes and unless you get an evil one (which can happen in any snake species) they tend to be really easy to handle.

wow i didnt expect that at all! its probably because ther a lot bigger maybe? i dont know! :sidestep: haha no i really didnt expect that at all though! so you can pik them up and stuff no problems? in general? in comparrison to the way corn hatchlings dont like to be piked up and stuf?

Ball pythons wont get any longer than corns, they're just fatter. I have a boa constrictor (which is very similar/the same in temperament to a ball python) and two corn hatchlings...put it this way: I can sit for 2 hours watching a film with my boa and have him just lounge on my lap or shoulder, yet I can barely hold my baby corns for 10 minutes without getting fed up of them running all over the place  .

I have never been bitten or struck at by my boa and he has only ever hissed once when he was shedding. My female corn on the other hand  ...when I first got her I'd be lucky to not get bitten 10 times before she was even out of the tub!

wow! so i now how thik they can get and stuff, but does that not make it harder for you to handle him because of the thikness?? its not like it can exactly weeve through your fingers is it??? lol

do you have any pics of your snakes you could show me please? id love to have a look. especially your boa??

On the contrary...my boa is much easier to handle than my baby corn snakes because he actually has something I can grab hold of :p. When handling you just hook your fingers under him and let him weave around your thumb or arm. They are much slower moving than corns as well which makes them easier to handle.

This is Nyx my boa:

...as you can see its easy enough to get hold of him :p.

There are more photos here:

My gallery

Bare in mind that boas can get quite big though (10ft ish) where as ball pythons stay at 5ft.

wow thats awsome!!!! beutiful snake mate! you have you own website as well? very impressive! what about your corns do you have any pics of them to show me? i would like ot see these also.
I am quite interested in pythons also, and you boa is georgeos. however my mum would NEVER allow me to get another snake while i still live 'under there roof' (you dont want to know how long it took me to purswade them to get a corn snake! lol but maybe one for the future when i have my own house! lol
what about when ther in ther vivs?? do they not hide most of the time like corns do??

My mum wouldn't let me have any snakes at all in her house so count yourself lucky :p. I'm in my own flat now so I got my boa :). His viv is in that gallery too (it measures 6ft x 2ft x 2ft) and will do him for life. A ball python would happily live in a 3ft by 18inches x 18inches though. When I first got my boa he was shy but now he likes to climb his bamboo quite a lot. Ball pythons are supposed to be pretty shy.

My two corns:

I don't have any ball pythons of my own but in the future I plan on getting some and maybe even a burmese python (now they are beautiful giants :p).

oh ye i saw those pics before in the gallery. very nice also!
i was wanting to ask you, you said that your snakes (like most babys) dont like to be piked up and strike at you a lot. so i was thinking, how do you pik them up? do you get them when they are still coiled or do you uncover them and wait till they start to move around a bit and them get them by the body. Thats how iv been doing it but i think it would be a lot quiker and a less strenuous progress if i just got him when he was still coiled.
I have been put off doin this though because he tried to strike me last week and i think its cos i reached for him when he was still coiled.
what technique do you prefer? iv never been bit but does it hurt at all?

The female corn you mean? Well when we first got her she was a complete psycho and you couldn't put your hand in the tub without her striking you (or actually Geoff :p) repeatedly. Her teeth were so small though that they didn't break his skin and he said it didn't hurt. I'd say the best way to do it is when they're still coiled...just gently put your hand flat towards them and slide your fingers underneath the coils. You may get bitten for a while but eventually the snake will realise that theres no point because you're going to do it anyway and that you're not going to hurt it.
