corns vs. garters

I have one 4-5 year old Snow corn named Jake. I've had him for a few years and i now have snake fever!!! I want more!!! I'm contemplating between buying a baby corn this summer, or buying a garter snake. Has any one out there had experience in keeping both corns and garters (not in the same cage of course)? I would like to know if one had any advantages over the other, which is more pleasing to keep, which can be more fun to keep, etc. I would greatly appreciate any feedback!!!

Although I don't have either, I am getting my corn in a week :D I have held both and corns are soooo much nicer. The first gerter snake I held bit me and wouldn't let go, and another one catapulted out of my hands and under a cage. I was at the store for hours trying to help the workers find him adn get him out. Most (all but 1) of the corns I've held have never seemed this hyper and none of them have bit me. Corns like to be held (to some extent), but garters kinda take it as a threat and will freak out even if you don't do much. Keep your eye on Serpenco and maybe you can get either a yearling or hatchling corn there soon! ;) I'm not ragging on garters but this is my opinion.

well my friend

garters are much harder to keep and blah blah ,,no offence to my fellow cornsnake people ,but the advantages are that garters eat fish, kingworms, catfood and frozen fillet if you ran out of mice for a while ,,,but dont feed them fish all the time for reasons,,,,and the 2nd advantage is that its a diurnal snake.
as a keeper of 4 different kinds of nocturnal snakes i could say that it is sad cause you cant really tell how your snake is acting and you cant watch it.

i once owned a diurnal snake,,,i never got bored of it.

kept watching it climbing the branches, moving around and all.

so thats why im buying a garter after a while,,, 3 weeks or so

Corns are most active in the morning and the evening. A baby corn will usually spend a lot of time hiding during the day. My adult corn also spends a lot of time lounging around or sleeping during the day, but he doesn't hide so much. He'll just sprawl anywhere in his cage, pretty much. :)

The best time for me to hold thim is after 5 PM. Until about 9 PM. That's when I have a lot of spare time. Would they be awake then? Or only during breedinng season?

Those times should be fine. Your snake may be awake, or may be sleeping then, it's hard to say. Depends on the individual, depends on the day... but it's okay to wake them up sometimes. :) Just leave it alone for about a week after you first get it, so it can get used to its new home. And many corns will hide all the time when they're in shed, and might not want to be handled at that time. Others don't seem to care so much.

LOL. Mating season with a male would be my favorite time because he will always be awake and roaming. Hope he doesn't get excited on my arm or poop on me... I am going to buy a sweater box for his poopy baths and another for feeding. After you feed it in the sweater box, i know it isn't good to handle it but do you pick it up to put it in its cage? Or just hold the box next to the cage opening? I prob should have made a new thread but w/e...
