Critter Cages, UTHs and questions from Canada

I've spent a few days on the forum looking around at different housing and I'm leaning more towards using a Sterilite tub for housing when I get my corn. I have mesh and wire lids for some of my aquariums already, but all of them make me nervous when I think about keeping a hatchling in them. Are there any tutorials about converting tubs?

What would be the appropriate way to use a UTH with one of these? I've heard both of using them on the plastic, and under a ceramic tile.

What brands would be best? Right now the only thing offered in stores around here is Exo Terra brand, both desert and rainforest models. These are made by Hagen, and my experiences with their non herp stuff has either been great or horrible. I'm willing to order online for this part, no problem. Rheostats are easy, I know how to wire plugs, so I can fix a dimmer switch to it.

What kind of thermometers would I need? I know getting the little round ones to measure temperature and humidity are good, but is there any type of hand held model I should purchase to poke under the substrate for spot checking? If so, which one? Again, very happy to order online for this.

Thanks very much for any help!
