Critter Cages

I would like to comment or complain about the Critter Cages made by All Glass Aquarium Company. I'm currently trying to get the lid fixed, but the aquarium is the type with the slide in and lock lid. The locks come unglued and the screen pulled out of the side of mine. I'm not the only one who I've heard this has happened to. It is also very easy to make holes in the screen with little pressure. Once the locks come undone, the lid can be pushed forward to allow escape. I'm posting this to let you know of the quality of them. POOR. I recently said they were a good cage on here somewhere, I have discovered the truth now that I have had it a little longer.

i've had the same problems with them. if you need replacement parts they have a toll-free number: 1-800-255-4527 this is their customer service number- if you need parts, ask for their parts department. also you can email at [email protected] ... good luck, jim :)

I have been using those for 3 years now but no problem at all... but now trying to switch them to my rack system that I built last week....just to safe some space....and now planning on getting a 7 foot python right now......just maybe.....

Just a little info...

Well... I called and they are supposedly shipping me a new screen lid and latches. The rep. acted a little weird on the phone. We'll see how it goes, I'll keep ya updated. Did they do the same for you? Hope the second batch works better. I mean, was this cage worth the money?

I have 2 of those

This is what you're talking about, right? My snakes figured out how to escape from them. I woke up one morning and both were gone! (in the same cage at the time). You NEED to lock these things if you have em - with small snakes anyways. I think they did it by pushing up on the lid when they were climbing around the edge like in the pic. Thicker guys couldn't do it. Hope this made sense.

critter cages...

ok, here's a list of my problems and what ive done...
the glue on the locks (those little adhesive strips) dries out after awhile and the locks pop off... some of mine are taped shut with duct tape and some of them have strips of velcro holding them on. i'm waiting to see how the velcro works long-term before i switch them all to it.
the other thing that seemed to happen quite easily on some of them (not all, but a few) was that the screen would come out from under the restraints set into the frame. (one of the ones i bought only had the metal stripping on 3 sides) some of these cages have the metal stripping and the older ones seem to be mostly rubber stripping. the rubber ones dried out and shrunk and then needed to be replaced. the metal strips if they come out have a little groove in them (they are "C" shaped) that you can fit a small screwdriver in and open them up a bit to make them fit tighter. i bought nylon screen and replaced 3 or 4 of mine pretty cheaply. (3 or 4 bucks)
that pretty much sums up my experience with them, now i just buy aquariums and the appropriately sized lids and clip them on. cheaper and less worries at least for me.
one more thing.... no they did not replace mine, i had to buy it :( good luck :)... jim

Yes, those are the tanks I'm referring to. Jim, I have th EXACT problems. They are sending me the new stuff. Hopefully I get the lid with the metal restraints for the screen. Once those latches slide off, he pushes the screen out and yes, he is a thicker, older snake. So for now, I have it ducktaped shut. I was soo angry, but I'm glad they are trying to fix their faults. I mean, You pay almost a hundred bucks for a tank, thinking it's a nice one and it doesn't work. Mine is a 40 gallon breeder.

recount...

pair of 40g breeders, pair of 30s, 2 29s, 4 20s, and one 15g---- all critter cages
had problems with most of them and have since switched to other aquariums and rack systems.
as far as alternative options for caging, i am in the process of converting a 60"x36"x18" bookcase and a glass-top coffee table (36"x36") into display cases for six of my snakes. the bookshelf has glass top-hinged doors, was bought at lowe's for $100, and will house four adult corns. the coffee table will house 2 corns, has a glass top, openings on all 4 sides, a solid wood recessed bottom (should hold shavings in real well), and best of all was free from a friend. both should be fairly easy to heat with heat tape, make escape-proof, water-proof, and should provide more than sufficient ventilation. hopefully when they are finished i'll be able to provide some pics. good luck with your caging. i hope all-glasss fixes your problems... :) ---jim
