Well I was leaving class today when Carl called me and said he found a snake. It was black with white on it. I thought oh black racer. They are common in this area so I told him to try and catch it well... they way he went about it was not the way I would have done it. By the time I told him to catch it, it had moved into an area that would make it unable to bring it back out but he held on to it until I got there so I could see it. Or at least some of it. Once I got there I was able to notice that it had some white lines on it's back side and from the quick glance I got seemed have a checkered like belly. Way to black to be a corn snake so I was still thinking a strange racer. Ialso noticed that above the vent area some the tail because black with zero color. Well I looked online and found out it's an Eastern Ratsnake. Below is a picture not of the snake but you can see the way the color changes in the tail. Yep, I found the snake. Oh and we let him go under the deck.

They're all over this area, I wouldn't mind some around my house. Bring me the next one?
We have woods behind our property at work and they come hunting around(and in) the buildings. I have a standing order at work to be called if someone has a problem being near a snake (they've killed one before). They just don't get that they are free, totally natural, no maintenance pest control.
This one was about five feet long, and a little upset at me for following him around for a pic.

I'm sure he was. If we catch the next one I'll bring it to you and you can quickly make the area under Cheerio into it's new home!

Nah, I was kidding, if I really wanted one I guess I'd bring one from work. Everytime I pick one up they squirt. I don't know if that gets better with time, maybe if you get a young one they could get acclimated to handling easier. The only one's I see at work are large.
I wouldn't mind having one in the yard, but I don't know if it would hang around very long. I suppose if I found a damaged one at work I would bring it home for a while, but not permanently.
The wooded area behind our shop is being altered (read as "overpass installed"), so I expect some displaced critters this summer. I've already seen more lizards than I've seen this early in past years.

I'm definitely serious! I've been looking, but I live in the city of Richmond..so we don't have a lot of the native fauna left.
 
Come up this way. I'm sure Alan will take you to work or you could just go wonder the parks. I'm sure you'll find something. I always do.
