Digital Camera's

Kevin M

Corn Addict
Hey all, My old Digital Camera died last week and I'm looking to get a new one. I wasnt too thrilled with my last camera and I'd like to get a real good one this time around. The only thing I'm looking for in a good cam is to take quality pictures.

Anyone have any suggestions? What do you use?

Thanks!
-Kev

Nothing but Sony

Hey Kev,
I bought a Sony Cyber shot about 2 years ago-I've loved it ever since. The model I bought they have updated allready. My Dad has a Mavica--better Zoom and has MPEG. The best feature I can recomend on any digital camera is USB picture transfer(via cable, not floppy adapter). My Sony DSC s30 has it --and it makes transfering pics to pc very fast.

Hey Kevin,

I am currently looking for a digi camera too. While I'm not sure which one I will get I do know one thing. I would look for one w/ no less than 3 mexipixels(sp). Anything less and I've been told the pics do not come out as sharp.
Good Luck and let us see some pics from the new camera when you get it.

L8r,

Hey Matt L

Do you like the DSCp30? I was nearly talked out of it by a salesman at CompUSA because he said it eats batteries fast! What do you think of it? Thanks

Well, I'm about to buy my first digital camera...I'm getting an Olympus D510Z...it's around US$300, and it's nice for that price. Hardly what I'd call pro level, though.

I'm not much of a camera bug, but I want to take nice pictures of my babies (er, snakes), and my girlfriend's orchids to post on the web. How "picky" are you? ;)

Peter,
The dscp30 uses a infolithium rechargeable battery. The camera tells you exactly how much battery life is left. The camera also shuts itself off after a short period of inactivity to conserve battery life. Without the flash you can get about 2.5 hours of use- about 3000 shots. I have never had a problem with the battery it will keep up with any amature photographer. Mine is about 2 years old -I know they have made alot of improvements in just those 2 years. While I know this camera will never replace my 35mm canon T90. It is very convient and a good value for the price. here's a Pic from the dscS30. Sorry It's not one of my cornsnakes. but this is just so you can see the picture quality. it is also one that happens to be in the camera at the moment(its also 200am and i'm not in the mood for a photo session)
Good Luck!

dscP30 or dscS30?

Are we talking about the same camera? it is so hard to keep all the numbers in my head. That is a great pic! Texas leucistic rat? The model I'm talking about will soon be replaced. It has 1.3 megapixels, does NOT have a power cord option, is currently about $199 at Best Buy. I'm not looking for anything at all near pro quality. Actually I've been pretty happy with a Sony Mavica I borrowed from school and its highest resolution is 640 x 480 so even a 1.3 is 4X better. There is now a DSCP31 that is $219 has 2.0 megapixels and a couple of other neat features but no optical zoom which is what I want. Oy vey!

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Matt L - Which camera is that pic from? Thats the dscp30?

Sorry

Peter,Kev-

Sorry I made a boo boo- What I have is actually a DSP-S30!
I had to go to Sonys website to see what the p30 was--totally different cameras. The closest model to my discontinued s30 is the dscp5, but with only1.3 mega pixels..... and yes that is my texas leucistic rat (thinks he's a cobra). The blur in the picture is actually him getting ready to strike the camera. I agree with the optical zoom! The digital zoom degrades the picture quite a bit. If you can afford a model with the infolithium battery,it is a worth while investment. I apoligize once again for the model discrepency, after a quick comparison I realized the models are completely different. Good Luck!

Sony DSCP5

I use the dscp5 & it's a good camera. I'm just learning how it works but have been happy with it so far. The Infolithium Battery is a plus.

hey guys

I've been doing a lot of research and my brain is full. It is tough trying to remember all those number/letter names for the cameras, especially when they are so similar. I did see that a DSCS30 existed.
One thing I have learned, it seems (when using nonrechargeable batteries) they all suck the juice.
one moment I am set on one camera and the next moment I am unsure or want a different one. Driving me crazy.

Time to do even more research...

I hear ya Peter. I'm jumping from one side of the street to the next myself. I'm thinking the Mactiva & DSP-S30 are tops on my lists right now. But I could very well hate both these camera's within minutes. hehe

Well Kevin,
About 2 hours ago I was all set to buy the DSC P30 and then I remember to look at an old article on digicams and it pretty much sold me on the DSC P50 and I now have one in my reasonably clean hands. As soon as I figure it out I'll have to post pics of the 40 kids. Am I right in understanding that the pics here do not have to be linked to a website?

You can either upload pictures to this site OR you can link them from another site to here.

I'll be looking forward to seeing some pictures when you figure out all the bells & whistles. I'm still no closer to knowing which camera Im want.

Anyone know of any special features I should be looking for? Like the no brainer features?

-Kev

Kevin

One thing I really wanted was optical zoom, basically digital just won't do it. I kind of would have liked to have one that uses Compact Flash type cards because the card readers for those are $20 and the Sony memory stick reader is $70! Otherwise, just go to Best Buy or Circuit City and try a bunch. I did start looking them up on Amazon and reading all the reviews of each model I was considering. That was really handy but also a bit of a brain overload. Good luck.

Thanks Peter

Best Buy. yes I must get over there soon. I try to stay away from best Buy as much as possible because I normally end up charging myself into severe debt. The place is almost as detrimental to my wallet as a Reptile Expo.

Kevin ,

I can't strees how much I appreciate the USB picture transfer. My camera uses a memory stick, but uploads pictures via the camera thru USB. I can transfer about 200 pics from camera to PC in less than a minute. I have worked with a floppy adapter for memory sticks and I was not impressed. The optical zoom (if you want a zoom feature) is a must. Digital zoom probably has it's place, but it degrades the picture too much. MPEG video is kinda neat, but I don't think it's a necesity, spend the extra money on optical zoom. If you want vidoe buy a digital video camera. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
