Digital Probe Thermometer? Wheeeere?!

I'll definitely start experimenting and see what works. My mom's friend (JTGoff69 on here) also said that ZooMed UTH's run pretty high as far as temperature is concerned.

I have the ZooMeds, I believe and yup, they run fairly high, but with the two books underneath the tank... which raised it about three inches, it really help.

There are 2 fairly cheap options for controlling the UTH, You can get a lamp dimmer at walmart , also in the hardware /electric section for about $9. With your new probe thermometer it should be easy to calibrate it to the proper 85 degrees or so.

Or you can get a ZooMed 500R thermostat at reptiledirect.com, which is an advertiser on this site, for $22.99 plus shipping. This same thermostat goes for $39.99 at Petco and other pet stores. I use 3 of them for my 5 corn snake tanks with ZooMed UTHs and they work just fine.

Stay away from the cheap "round top" thermostats from ESU and rebadged with other names. They have been known to malfunction and leave the UTH on full blast.

I got a lamp dimmer at Home Depot for $5.99 and the digital thermometer/hygrometer with probe at K-mart for $9.99 and it seems to work great for my yearling, (Hatchling bailed but set up still there)..
Just watch for sales..

My parents are stopping by Wal-Mart tonight for painting supplies and they agreed to grab me a dimmer switch. Right now I'm just plugging in and unplugging the UTH in super-short intervals to keep it at the 85 and keep Hestia happy.

Let me tell you, I can't wait to get that switch installed! All this crawling under my desk is a workout!
