DIY hide - what woods are safe?

Smells Like a Rat
Hey guys. My dad is a very handy guy and he said he would make a nice wooden box hide for Amadeus (the big boy) if I gave him the dimensions and found out what woods were considered safe.

Knowing that pine and cedar are not safe for bedding, should I assume they are off the list for building materials? Or are they alright as long as they're not in chipped form, giving off dust? What wood is recommended?

Also, understanding that the hide would be sanded smooth, would you recommend sealing it with something weather proof? This guy likes to spill his water dish occasionally...

Thanks

Most woods are safe for hides, but why bother....
The centre of rolls of carpet work fine, and broken pots, ceramic holders etc work well....Or a nice piece of slate/flag stone that your snake can get under looks good as well....

Oh I know they're not picky about hides. He's already got a PVC tub - but I like the look of a nice wooden hide, and my dad likes building things.

My hides are my hollow rim, dog bowl water dishes with a hole cut into the side, dual function and takes less space. If you do decide on wood
Anything that is not pressure-treated, cedar, pine.
are correct as well as redwood. I would use maple or oak and encapsulated ( painted on all sides) it with a non-toxic, waterproof enamel that has no VOC's and let it dry until there is no detectable odor.
