In the wild, cornsnakes do hibernate. In captivity, they don't need to be hibernated (called brumation). However, many breeders brumate their snakes to help with breeding. Not all of them do, however, and many don't see much of a difference either way. I'm not sure on all the specifics, but their temperature is gradually lowered to a certain range and they are left alone for a while.

While I've never brumated any snakes, I've read that all they need is a dark place to chill, maybe a hide, and a thing of water. I don't know how active they are during this period. If you do a search on brumation, you'll find posts that talk about when to start cooling them down, how long, what to do about feeding afterwards, etc.
