Do I need a second heating mat?

*Insert Witty Title Here*
Up until now, I've been using a heating mat under one side of the tank to keep it at around 85 degrees...and the other side has just naturally been in the seventies (allthough, sometimes higher...I live in Southern California). It's starting to get almost cold outside now though, and I just looked at my tank- 85 on the warm side...and 68 on the cool! Gah! So, should I buy a second heating mat to make sure the cooler side is always around 75...or will she just hang out on the warmer side on colder days and not to worry about it.

Thanks!

I live in northern MN and it is cold here all the time! LOL! I wouldn't put 2 heat pads on the tank because the snake needs to be able to choose which side, warmer or colder, he would like to be on. Also, my tank is always at about 83 degrees and my snake is happy! Good Luck! :)

Right, I know...but the cooler side is supposed to be around 75, and right now it is at 68....and I have a thermostat, so I can set the heatmats for specific temps...meaning I can have one that stays at 85, and the other that stays at 75...I'm just wondering if that's actually necessary, you know? I know she's smart enough and will just gravitate towards the warm side if the cool side is getting to cold for her, so I'm probably worrying about nothing. :)

I know what you're saying. I live in N CA and it's really starting to cool down at night. I think you're smart to get this figured out now. I know last year our house got down to the high 50's and low 60's a lot of nights... Gosh that's brumating temperature :D Great for the breeders, but not what I had planned for the rest of the crew.

Since you have a thermostat and can control the UTH temperature, I'd get another one. Either that, or I'd suggest trying to control the room temperature. That'd cost more money though, and for one snake I'd say the thermostat controlled UTH should work just fine. Since I have a snake rack with quite a few snakes, I'm thinking about buying a portable heater with thermostat. That way I can keep the snake room temperature at the suggested cool range... then, let the heat tape do it's job for the higher temp.
