Do snakes have a scent

Ohhh. So *that* is what i noticed with my bloodred a few weeks ago. The bastard! Missed me though. hehehe.

Lucky you...

If he does get you, you will know from the smell...and sometimes it is hard to get the scent off with only one washing.

Well i never noticed anything of the like. So i've probably never been a victem of one of these pranks. But i will try and get my dad to hold them the next time. He's not so good with animals :)

Though i did check the smell of 2 of the exact same plants but with different inhabitants. One didn't smell, the other pretty bad. I guess that's the musk.

that would be a safe guess. Each snake family has a different musk scent. There is a snake that lives in Northeastern US (in New York and Maryland) that when it musks, it smells like a cucumber. Really good sign to know when you are out in the woods and you know there are no cucumbers around.

Snakes Scents

Most snakes (Especailly older more mature snakes). Have a very light scent that they musk when they are nervous or are on the verge of being ready to breed. :wavey:

wow now this is interesting i have never ever known this and ive kept my corns for 9 years now. LOL. i have never witnessed any of them opening their vents for anything except when they poop, when i smell in their vivs the only thing i smell is the substrate and i do sniff my snakes, LOL, i actually stick my nose right up against them and smell but they only smell of their substrate, not once have i ever smelt anything bad about them, again though, only when they poop, thats when i open their vivs and i get knocked back by the stench, hehe, my male is now 5 foot 10 inches, hes pretty big therefore has big poop. lol. ok wont gross any of you out anymore, definitely interested me though, will be watching like mad now next time they are out.

I have 9 corns and out of 9, only one has ever musked. I know that they can all do it, but most corns are very mild tempered and laidback. You will usually not get a snake to musk at you unless you agitate them. King snakes are one species that usually musk all the time...especially the mexican blacks.
