Do Snakes Sleep?

Hi,

I don't know whether or not this is a dumb question, but do snakes sleep? I know they don't have eye lids so I can't tell.

Thanks!

Actually, I stumbled acroos your topic right before I was about to ask the sme thing. I don't know. I've never caught my snake "sleeping". Sometimes he will seem to be sort of dazed, but never really sleeping...

Good question though, and as they say, "Great minds think alike"

Haha yep! Anyway, I think the same thing happens with my snake, I guess he is sleeping cause he doesn't move or react to anything, but then I will make a noise or something and he will jerk and shrink away.

I am pretty sure snakes sleep. I can't be certain, cause none of my homeboys speak fluent Ball Python! I will get back to you on this one...

Ps. Sleeping with no eyelids would suck!

this is my theory, i dont think snakes need to sleep as in "turn off their minds" but they would sleep as in physically and sorta trance out lol

I read somewhere that some snakes simply contract their pupils and of course hide in a dark spot to get some shut-eye.

So heres the deal! Mammels have a gland in their brain that produces melatonin slowly throughout the day. It also increases the production when you are in a dark environment making you tired. When you sleep you body is able to efficiently process the melatonin. I would have to do some research to see if reptiles, let alone snakes have an chemical process that is similar. This is all based on me being hopeful that someone has done the research to begin with!!!
