Yesterday I put my new thermostat into my little guy's tank, with the cord running up the inside wall of his tank and coming out the top. The only problem is that the lid doesn't close down all the way now with the thick power cord under it. So far Tar hasn't escaped, or even tried that I know of, but I'm worried that he will be able to. The cord lifts up the tank probably about a good millimeter. I currently have scotch tape running along the lip of the tank where the cord is sticking out, but that is really a temporary fix that I can hopefully give up on soon.

Are there any other suggestions? I can't be the only one with this problem, how do you guys have the cords in your tank situated?
 
If you have to ask, he probably can! Try to post a picture if you can, that would help us answer the question better.

Is there any way you can modify the lid to accept the cord? If its plastic, sometimes you can melt a notch or drill a hole.

Is the WHOLE thermostat in the cage or just a probe? I've confused as to why a thermostat would need a power supply IN the cage.
 
You only need to put the probe inside the tank, as Sita says. However, even the probe cord is likely to lift the lid enough to allow him to escape. I'd say there's a real risk.

What sort of tank do you have? There's probably somebody on here who has already dealt with the problem in the same setup. If you can give us the specifics or even better, pics as Sita says, then we should be able to help.
 
No, sorry, just the probe is in the tank. The lid is plastic, so I might try to cut a notch in it to let the cord slip through it without lifting it up.

I'm not sure if my setup is good or not... I'm really paranoid he's going to get out.
 
I'm not sure on the exact model of the tank. It's a 10-g with a crossed wire lid. I have the lid held down with 4 clamps.
 
I looked at the rest of your threads, but you haven't mentioned how big your snake is. I'm trying to picture the smallest I can, and I don't think he'd be able to squeeze through. Since there's clamps on it, he wouldn't be able to nudge his nose in and lift the lid, if he's even strong enough. It looks like he'd have to be the size of the cord or less to be able to get through.
 
I havet the same lid on my baby bp tank its a zilla lid. if you look at the corners there should be one notched out larger then the others. try running your cord through there. it helps lower the lid and keeps the cords from getting pinched.
 
As already stated if there is a doubt in your mind, then yes your snake can escape. lol

This is right on. Most of those kind of lids have notches in the corners just for that purpose. It may not get rid of the gap but it will help.
