Just as a side note, if you want to try the snipping you could go for frozen pinks (most pet stores sell them also, and all the ones around here sell them for a somewhat reduced rate). Then there is the added convenience of pulling one out of the freezer 5 minutes before you need it rather than running to the store (and other benefits too, but I won't get into that now):)

I have considered going with frozen, but come on, where is the fun in that lol!

So i put Nagini in a glad container with her pink, and she didnt seem interested, so I went to go clean the tank, also switching from turn to aspen, came back and no change, I then saw her bite the pink in the butt? area... and I was thinking sweet, here it comes... those little squeaks are soo cute, haha, man im sick! but then she let go??!! All this internal fluid started leaking out and the pink is writhing in pain, but she still wont eat the entree... hope I dont have anyproblems. Ill post if it is successful.
 
Well, pinky lives to see another day, unless it dies from the mortal wound, I dont know what to do with it now though. It is still moving around so I guess it isnt htat bad. Should I try feedinga gain in the morning or later in the day or should I give it another day?
 
If I were you, I'd freeze the pinky, first of all to put it out of its misery, but also so you can feed it to your snake later, and try again next time. You don't want to try to feed her too often and stress her out. Since she is still small you can probably try again in 3 or 4 days and try to do all the things that people here suggest. Put her in the tupperware, but cover it so its really dark inside and leave her for overnight and don't bother her. Watching her eat is fun, but first you have to get her to eat....period. Actually, after awhile, maybe a month or so, it gets kind of old. Its pretty much the same thing every time. Sometimes if its frozen, I wiggle it around for a little variety and to try to get her to constrict just so she uses her muscles and gets some exercise, but generally they won't constrict a pinky....because...they don't hardly struggle at all anyway. Well good luck though.
 
Mine strike and constrict frozen just they would live. There is no reasonable reason why you'ld feed live except that it appears you're a bit sadistic and like watching things suffer. The day you feed a live adult mouse and the sucker kills your snake, you might reconsider.
 
I wouldn't advise keeping the pinky alive if its been injured. Put the poor bugger out of its misery (freezer) if it's hurt at all. How would you like your father to repeatedly attempt at feeding you to a snake? (Bear in mind the snakes a 25 foot Anaconda compared to you)
Switch to frozen thawed if at all possible, even if you breed your own, kill them first. The sooner the better or your snake may get to a point where it will only take live prey.

Keep in mind that if you offer food too often you may not only stress the snake out, but it may refuse to eat all together and starve to death (bummer). Anyway, I'd say throw the mouse in the freezer this time, and if you want to go with live again the next time you feed (preferably at least 4 days from yesterday when you offered food last), then go ahead and you'll have the frozen mouse in the freezer as a back up.

I know in the beginning I swore I would only ever feed live too, but eventually the practicality of buying frozen mice in bulk set in, and I took that route. Hopefully your next feeding will be more successful.:)
 
live vs frozen

Definately suggest Frozen Thawed as well. I only fed live once to a corn and then again last night to a ball python, I only fed live to trigger a feeding response. Trust me feeding frozen is way cheaper, and less of a hassle. With live there is sooo many things that can go wrong, even watching it you will not be able to respond in time to save your snake if the mouse decides to attack. Ofcourse there is always the people who think Live is better, but in my opinion frozen thawed is the Best!

The only problem I have is that my mom (yes, unfortunately i still live at home :cry: ) she is both phobic of snakes and mice, should have seen her reaction when she saw Nagini... and we don't have a big freezer, just the one in the fridge. I don't think she would like to find little mice body's in the freezer. Although, i would lover to see her reaction to that too!! :grin01: Just kidding MegF.

And I'm not sadistic! I'm an omnivore, I eat meat, and it was a joke, lighten up! I was kidding, but there is a natural order to things, we cant change that. Well we can but we risk screwing up the environment if we try.

Anyway the real reason for this post is, if I put her in the container overnight, were do I leave it? Doesn't she need to be in her viv with water and thermoregulation and all that jazz? Would she be ok?

I will wait to do anything until I hear back. I will look into frozen, it is only the first time feeding her so Ill see.

PssdffJay - my hubby hates mice in the freezer too. So I wrapped them up in a plastic shopping bag and put a little note on them that says "mice". He didn't have to see them. However, I recently ordered 500 mice . . . I can't hide those! LOL He is working on getting a seperate freezer for mice. Anyway, if you only have 1 snake you could get enough mice to last a couple months, as long as your mom can't see the mice cause they are wrapped up, and she knows what they are so she doesn't discover them by accident, it might work.

I think you should wait until your snake's next regular feeding, 5 to 7 days, before offering the mouse again. If you put her in her feeding container in her viv, put it on the cool side so she doesn't get too warm. She will be fine in the feeding container overnight, so don't worry about that. Good luck!
 
Is there anyway you could purchase a little freezer to keep f/t mice in? Say in the corner of your room. That way it's completely out of sight. Fortunately for me, my frozen mice come in plain white plastic tubs. The only way you know they're mice is if you look at the lid and read it there. Anyway, most snakes have no problem changing to f/t as long as you warm them well. I just put them directly in water and never have had a problem feeding them that way.
 
seal it in plastic bag, tuck that into a paperbag, fold it up real tight and tuck it in the back corner behind something. She'll never know it's there and if she opens it up have a look of suprise and say, "OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CHICKEN NUGGETS?"

I did just that, to bags and I put a not telling her not to open in, and what does she do? She opened it!! 6 in the morning I hear screaming coming from upstairs, and I run up thinking someone is dying; she wasnt too pleased! Lol. Anyway, new news, I just got home with a 40 gal tank that she can grow into, and I will wait untill friday again to try feeding.

I dont know what Rikki Tikki Tavi is, but if you are a book reader, (i am a dork, I admit it but they are sooo good!) Nagini is the nake of the snake that Lord Voldemort has from the fourth Harry Potter book, The goblet of fire. In case you were wondering, the name will come more recognisable when the move is released later this year. And only 6 days untill the 6th book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (like I said, i admit im a dork so what! lol)
 
My mom was the same way about my keeping worms in the fridge and bug cultures in my room when I was growing up. Try reasoning with her as it worked for me.

Ask her to explain why it's OK to keep big slabs of bloody dead cow, slices of turkey flesh and dead chicken embryos in the fridge, but a few lab raised, clean frozen mice are a big deal.

Mmmmm,dead chicken embryos.... *Homer Simpson gurgling noise* Just kidding!lol She is pretty much avoiding the topic completely so I dont think it will be too big a problem now, hopefully anyway. She wont even come down stairs anymore (thats not such a bad thing :) lol) but we'll see. THe 40 gal tank is uber big, bigger than anything I have to put under it, but my neighbour is a carpenter so I am going to see if he can help me build something like a stand with room underneath, maybe even electrical and i could put a sweet little freezer underneath all hidden like! might even look really good! We'll see. If i ever do figure something and ever figure out how to post pictures i will post them...somehow! Night all. :cheers:
 
good morning all i have a ?. will a corn overfeed herself if food is readilly available to her. she is about 2.5 feet long not sure how old just bought her about 3 weeks ago. anyway last feeding was Friday and then i decided to see if she was hungry and feed her sunday and she ate quickly. so was wondering if i need to feed moire often then (every 5 days) the pet store told me. i m feeding her live mice. also do i need to dust the mice with vitamins or anything. thnx for the input :)
 
how i feed and it works great is i have a 10 gal tank with carpet on bottom. then i put live mouse in there then i put Snake in there. snake hopefully wont associate my hand with the mice, thnx
 
Dude, post your own thread. Then ask away. Oh btw I'd say your snake is a yearling. Mines the same (30 inch/2.5 foot), and she was born on 19/6/04. (6/19/04 if your american ;))
 
Since you've asked, yes, they will overeat if offered food. I'd switch to frozen as soon as possible, and no, you don't need to supplement.
 
Update on my big tank:

I went to the pet store to get a cover for it and i saw one that looked about the right size a dimensions, but it said it was for a 50 gal tank. I got it anyway and it fits perfect on my '40gal' tank. when I bought the tank from the store, there was no label or sticker, they told me it was a 40gal and charged me the price of the 40gal, so i got my tank, that is actually a 50gal for about $60 cheaper! SCORE!! I didnt tell them their mistake, but it worked in my favour.

Construction hasnt started yet, i have to wait untill i get payed, but I keep haveing weird dreams every night that Nagini is biting my finger... anyone else get that? Or am I just a freak?
