do you think this hide is OK?

Check out the thrift stores in your area. I've found some interesting hides there, masquerading as flower pots, craft materials, and statues.

And no, you don't need a tall hide unless there's a way for the snake to climb up the inside walls. In fact, lots of corns like having most of their body in contact with a hide's surface. Others obviously have different ideas, though. Tall won't hurt, but isn't strictly necessary.

Or you could buy a small Cat litter box, flip it upside down and cut a hole in it.... Just a thought.

Yeah, thats what I thought as well. I always thought smaller = better. I was afraid mine were too big.

I bought the smallest one they had.

I use an old tupperware container. a Crown royal whiskey sachet bag and a kleeneex box.. total money spent Zero. Snake loves em all.

Walmart sells heavy plastic picnic ware usually 4/$1. I get the plastic bowls, burn a hole in the top, put them in the cage upside down and presto! In my experience, snakes are like cats and kids. You can spend tons of money buying the hide/toy that is most appealing to YOU, but the animals/kids usually prefer the box it came in.

I just went to my local dollar store and got a 6 pack of small tupperware ( about 16 oz. ) for a buck. I cut a hole with a utility knife, cover the ouside with heavy duty tape to make it dark inside and cover any sharp edges you might cut. Put moist new zeLand moss inside and put the lid on and turn it over, the snake will go in the hole to the moist moss inside .

I made wet hides from big sour cream containers and just got a cocoa powder box cleaned out for the little snake. They can be used as dry hides as well. Makes it easy to pick the snake up without uprooting the vines or probes and a lot better for the snake since she isn't being yanked from a paper towel tube any longer. I'm going for the recycled look in my tanks.

I wouldn't put anything in with duct tape into a snake tank. I've seen far to many pictures of mangled snakes to ever risk it.

I second this idea. I bought kid-size plastic cereal bowls (I think they were 4 for $2 at target?) for the smaller snakes, upgraded to regular size plastic bowls for the bigger ones. I used a dremel to cut an entrance hole at the lip of the bowl, invert it, and walla. My snakes love these, even the ones over 300g still fit in. They're easy to clean/disinfect too, and will last forever.

I also like to use boxes from things like cereal or fruit roll ups...free and disposable. Not so much in to paper towel rolls anymore since I can't get the bigger snakes out of them!

I agree the plastic hides are best. We have some of the wodden ones and we have a snake that loves getting water all over the place no matter what type of water dish I give her, she somehow manages to find a way to make a mess of it. Needless to say a wood hide quickly started growing mold on it and no amount of scrubbing, baking or cleaning would get rid of it completely.
I do like the cereal bowl idea though.
