So my sisters hamster died of old age yesterday, And i managed to try and let me feed it to my snake, she let me, but now she keeps going on and on about it!

- The feed

I personally wouldn't have fed the hamster to one of my snakes, a) out of respect for a family members beloved pet, and b) because it's probably not the most reliable food item to give to the snake. It could have died of a disease, have had disease set in, etc... and I wouldn't want to just pass it along to a perfectly healthy snake. Just my 2 cents!

Well, where i am from, it is the law to only feed snakes dead food, so i don't see your point, it was freshly dead

Haha well I wouldn't feed an old dead hamster to my snakes because you don't know how it died, and once you switch prey items you might have a hard time getting the snake to eat mice again. Hopefully you won't have that problem!

You know, just after i did it it did come to my awareness (what if it had a disease) i know if i thought about it before i wouldn't have done it, and im just preying that this isn't the case

Hey little man. Calm down. I'm sorry for labeling you a troll initially; you don't really seem like one after all. Doing such a thing out of morbid curiosity is wrong on a a couple levels. The hamster more than likely DID die of old age, statistically speaking, but you can't rule out the opposite for sure.

Treat all animals with respect; even though they are for your pleasure and enjoyment, they depend on your discretion and proper care to survive.

where i am from it is not a law but i too feed mine f/t food for many different reasons. But i would not have fed it that hamster only for the fact that you do not know why it died. Who know it could have been old age or it could have been lots of other things. Lets hope it was just old age. I would watch him closely for now until he passes a few stools to make sure nothing out of the ordinay occurs. good luck

I have a female mouse with pups 3 died I took them to vet and they died coz they didn't eat enough I tryed but they would not take it. So I have frozzen them and will be on the next menu.

I've done it. My Brother called me over to take my nephew's guinea pigs. He's had them for 8 years, they are both old as sin, and they were no longer being cared for the way they should've been. So...

Made my boas very happy. Food is food. If the family was not comfortable with it, they would say something. I did not coerce in any way. Actually, I was approached by them. Still, I would see nothing wrong with it.

Wait... You took mice... to the vet?

Don't take offense to my tone. I'm just, um... "shocked" I suppose. You're a better person than I am.

I've also heard that in England it's illegal to feed a live animal to another animal (not counting stuff like crickets I suppose)

if it did die of old age it also probably had higher fat content. depending on the snake it is not good for some species to ingest high levels of fat.

I seem to remember hearing that as well...or is it RAISING your own feeders that is illegal?

I don't have a problem with it. The way I see it, if it had a good life, pet or not, it won't do anyone any good to just bury it when there are lots of hungry things out there that'd love an easy meal. Heck, when my snakes die (hopefully a long time from now) I intend to leave their body somewhere mountainous where one of the many snake eating creatures that exist can have a good meal. It's a little utilitarian for a lot of sentimental people but if it's dead already it probably doesn't care about being food for another living thing.
