Last Christmas, I got Rose a snakey hide, which was like half a hollow rock with a notch in the side. She loved it and was using pretty much only that one for about half a year. And then I put a wrapping paper tube in there and then she moved to that one, and used it for months. A couple weeks ago, a made this really crappy half-box out of a sheet for cardboard. I thought, "Oh well, she probably won't like it, but it's at least some more hide choices." And then she became obsessed with that and used it until a couple days ago, when I got her a cat bowl. Yes, a cat bowl. It's one of those plastic hollow ones with just a dip in the middle to put water in. I don't think she's gone in any of her other hides since. :rolleyes:

Sooooo.... Do any of your snakes have this interesting habit? :grin01:

By the way, do any of you have a ball python? I got one recently at the Breeders Convention. (I saw Kathy and Bill Love there, OMG! :)) Anyway, can anyone tell me if they normally have a bluish tinge in sunlight? I was thinking its a shed, but she's been like this since Sunday and her eyes haven't clouded up or anything. :shrugs:
 
Yeah, they choose whichever hide provides them with the right combination of temps and security. There's no obsession, or any other human emotion involved. They generally prefer close-fitting hides in the proper temp ranges.
 
my snakes love to push the subsrate out of the way so they just have enough room to squeeze under the water dish lol. :crazy02:
 
Ya, fancy hides here, and my snakes hide under the waterdish or under the substrate while digesting on the warm side. :shrugs:
 
Mine always stays under one peice of cork bark on the cold side...I'm thinking about moving it to the warm side to see if it's the hide or the temperature she likes... :shrugs:
 
My one boy LOVES his shelf in his viv, doesn't matter if there's a hide up there or not, he's there! lol He also liks his cave and the long paper towel roll I put in there for him! lol

Battle, the little one, LOVES sleeping in toilet rolls! lol Doesn't matter where they are, he's in one. (of course I have a few in the warm and cool part of his viv! lol)
 
Yep, my snakes all seem to have a hide they prefer. Except for my California King snake. He seldom goes into any of his hides any more. He seems to prefer even sleeping out in the open.

As for your ball python question, my two seem to have that bluish tinge in certain light. It looks like an oil slick on water.
 
In certain light, you will see a bit of iridescence which may look bluish on a ball python. I see it more after my girl has shed and her skin is "new". =)
