do your snakes seem happy living together?

I'm not going to sit around and say that all snakes enjoy each other's company because for every story we have to support that, there is also a story supporting the opposite. It has worked out for me, however, when housing these corns together, so I'm not in a hurry to break it up. I did have them seperated for brumation, and they did seem almost bothered, but I'm not exactly sure if it was the fact that they were seperated, or they just didn't like the cold.

both of my corns are found sleeping outside their hides alot. both of them move around alot too. i had my normal by herself, then put her with my okee and havn't noticed any change in time out touring or anything. we cant tell how they feel, we arent snakes and we will never know,.

i've been keepin mine together for a little over a year and havent seen any problems...they seem to enjoy each others company.

Here are my 2 snakes Amber (female) and Humbug (male). I got Amber first and the only change I have noticed it that she doesnt seem as shy as she was before. She comes out a bit more and lets me pick her up right away. I cant really say they are 'happy' as I dont know but I guess if they didnt like each others company they would stay in seperate hides. But if Humbug moves, Amber follows!! They are both really placid snakes and I love them to bits

wow vickie, those are awsome looking snakes, what size viv do you use for two full ones, well waht is yours in that upper picture? I will probably just get a bigger regular tank, and save my money on the custom like viv's for boas and pythons or whatever else.

I always find this topic interesting. Although I don't house my corns together, I do have one long tank divided by plexiglass to house my three 04 hatchlings. There is a small space on top where the plexiglass couldn't reach to the top of the screen cover, so I plugged the spaces with a non-toxic moulding-type of clay. When the clay isn't just right after I close the lid, these little buggers wind up in the same section in the same hide. So now they definitely know each other is there, and when given the chance they group together. Perhaps as smaller snakes, it is a defense thing, feeling safer in numbers vs. actually wanting company. But like the previous post, since we don't really know what they are thinking, I guess we may never know.

I have an amel and a snow that i house togather. they are inseperable, always in the same hide, or branch curled around each other. if one moves the other usually follows. I may be a newbie to herps but they deffinatly seem to love being togather.

My opinion?......

I don't believe the snakes brain is capable of higher thinking, or thinking at all for that matter.

I also don't believe that snakes have emotions, so the snake can't be happy alone or in the company of another snake.

Of course we can't read thier minds but I don't think you'd find much in there anyway.

Clint is right

Snakes do not have the capacity to "like" or "enjoy" each other's company.
The only time corn snakes will actively seek each other out is to reproduce.
Not to be friends or tank mates or traveling buddies or whatever.
Their brains just do not have the capacity.
All of these snakes that must like each other beacause they are always in the same hide together, are in most instances, in the same hide together because that particular hide has the most optimum conditions.
The twitch is not only done at mating time or to stimulate the opposite sex. It is also done between rival males, between females, between males and females unfamiliar with each other..etc, basicly when stressed.
I have seen it done with a king snake in a nearby container.
I have seen it done due to some apparent odor on my hands. Possibly the smell of my dogs, cats, beardies or other snakes.
I have even seen it done with the introduction of new substrate.

like I said, we cannot tell and never will know how they exactly feel, and how complext their brains are, we cant just look at diagrams or charts to see how they feel. you just cant say they have not emotions or feeling of comfort, not being rude or nothing, but simply, we are not snakes, so we cant tell. :headbang:

oh dear what have I started? lol well its definately a subject of varied opinions anyway, personally I'm not saying snakes are avid social party creatures just that mine do seem to seek each other out even when outside of their viv and such and are more relaxed when held by me than strangers and such,I believe the familarity creates maybe security in their minds, hey this lady handles me nicely, feeds me lots, keeps me warm,I like her,my pal picks my female and she hates it yet he s had more snakes than I ever have.

I believe they do have emotions just on a more base level than ours,as all animals do and as for brains and thought processes I guess we'll never know
I don't believe the snakes brain is capable of higher thinking, or thinking at all for that matter.
lmao that sounds like an awful lot of the human species also :D ;) and as for scents my snakes seem to get stressy if I smell of my older cat because she tries to get them while they are at the glass but not if I've been holding my kitten who leaves them well alone and runs a mile if they hiss or rattle !!!

I'm agreeing with shimmer on the part when they may know the same person as far as handling. yea that top post is better than others at least.

I just look at it from a logical standpoint.

The human brain is well documented in it's functions, therefore, we can use it as a template to annualize the functions of other brains.

If we look at the size and configuration of the snake brain we'll find that the parts that are used for emotions and higher thinking, those locations are absent.

I'm not guessing, I'm going by scientific facts. The snake brain is not wired for thought or emotion

Yes, all of us greedy American capitalist pigdogs were given what for. He also went around and gave positive points to a bunch of people from the UK.

Must still be mad about all the tea that got dumped in the harbor. :shrugs:
