Does gender matter?

It probably won't make much difference. Males are fun, because when they get ready to be a daddy they'll chase themselves sometimes thinking there's a female in the tank with him. If you get a female, you gotta keep in mind the whole egg-binding thing, even if she doesn't breed :uhoh:. In general, females get a little bigger to allow room for the eggs. Good luck with your decision. :)

If you're one of those people who just can't take it when your snakes don't eat for a while, get a female. It's not uncommon for males to go off their feed for a good while during the breeding months.

I have only one female, the others are males. They are all almost yrlings, I haven't had any issues. I did not decide on sex, I just made my decision on the snake that I liked. I would think that if you plan on breeding that should be considered. I don't, so I guess I will have a house full of MALES...YIKES!! LOL

Sexes are pretty much the same. Snakes don't have gender. That's a human social thingie. If you get something like a ghost corn, the sexes can look different, so you may want to pick your sex of choice depending on the coloration you like more!

With females my only worry would be the possibility of becoming egg-bound. Seeing as how I have two males as far as my corns go, and one female Western hognose, I'm not too perturbed. :p
I do worry a bit about my hoggy, though, as she gets closer to breeding age. Hmm.

Since a lot of ppl go MAD when their snakes don't eat I would say get a female as well. Males can stop eating for months at a time during breeding season, and people FREAK! hehe. Females do have a binding issue as adults, even if they aren't bread however if shes healthy you run a lot less of a risk (ie good weight, not too much fat etc). Good luck with your decision! I hope you the best.

Apart from the breeding season differences mentioned above, there aren't any behavioural/"personality" (for want of a better word) gender differences e.g. males don't express a preference for football and belching, nor do females throw crockery at your head one week in four... ;-)
