Does my corn need additional light in the basement?

Ive read a lot about lighting and heating on this site, and have learned so very much. My other 2 corns are perfectly happy in rooms that get plenty of daylight with their reostat controlled UTH's. But I've decided I need a friend to keep me company in my quilt studio...which is my basement. I work down there most days with the lights on for 5 hours or so, but otherwise it only gets very dim morning light from 2 high mini basement below grade windows. It is enough to see by and not run into something on the way to the laundry...but really, not much. Should I offer additional lighting?? Thank you so much.

You could use a small florescent light on the viv for the snake. They put off light and not much heat. And please keep us posted on your new little gem.

So...that would be something I could get at a pet store? They always give such crummy advice. When I've been in and said I only use a regulated UTH they have tried to sell me heat lamps over and over. I should click on a small UV light for maybe 6 hours a day or so? thank you!

I don't even think it necessarily would have to be a UV light. I guess the reason they need light would be to regulate their day/night cycle - I don't really know if it's necessary or not, but you could probably just click any light on during normal daytime hours just to give the snake the feeling of day and night if it's too dim?

Also, I think you can get a simple on/off timer at like Home Depot or Lowes, so you wouldn't have to worry about forgetting to turn the light off at night, etc. :) We use one during the Holidays to turn the christmas lights on and off!

I started a thread some time ago, found here, which discusses this a little bit. My snakes are all housed in the basement as well which is why I went ahead and got lights.

These only cost $3.95 a piece at Home Depot.
