Drink with a bite!

There are cultures overseas (I can't remember where, but I want to say some asian cultures) that put all kinds of snakes and other animals in their rice wine. They say they have different cures and purposes.

It is crazy... I watched a show about it a few months back.

411 rattlesnakes died for that? That's a waste of 411 perfectly good rattlesnakes and 411 bottles of vodka.

Chris

Yeesh, only in Texas, only in Texas. And watch since they are rattle snakes, they are going to get slapped on the wrists.

Not saying I'd ever do it or buy it, but I fail to see why it's such a big deal? :shrugs:

Animals being killed for human consumption?!?! THE HORROR!

Ok, maybe you could say because they were just baby snakes, but even then, how many baby mice/rats do we kill every day to feed our snakes? When you really think about it, it's not any different than what goes on in slaughter houses and fishing markets every day, IMO. Plenty of animals are killed for consumption every day, without any outrage (well, except for some vegan and similar type groups, but that's another story altogether). And many just because they taste so damn good, not because they're necessary for our survival. How is this any different?

Although I agree with your sarcastic statement, I disagree with some of your last points.

Even though some/many of the things that we eat aren't necessary for our survival, they still provide some nutritional value and so therefore, our body has a use for it.

However, putting a dead baby rattlesnake in a bottle of vodka is not going to improve its nutritional value, and I seriously doubt they'd eat a raw baby rattlesnake whole, there would be hardly any meat. So therefore, it's just killing for the sake of killing and for something, in their opinion, looking good. No different from killing an animal purely for its skin and fur, do you agree with that?

My biggest problem with this is the hypocrisy that venomous snakes can be killed in numbers with out any consequences. In most states, IF you can even touch non-venomous snakes, or hunt/capture any other native species you need a license, at minimum. Venomous snakes are killed without any consideration to their population numbers or impact to the environment. These snakes were not farmed for consumption, and no one went through any legal hoops to acquire a license to hunt them. They were just removed from an ecosystem and killed by some dumb redneck for profit. I have a problem with ALL poachers.

No, I don't agree with that. The snakes are put in for a perceived health benefit. Whether it's real or not isn't up to me to say, but it is not just for look. True, some people may see it that way, but the practice was not started for any visual appeal. It's completely different.

And the sarcasm was my way of pointing out the hypocrisy, just for the record.

What's the percieved health benefit then?

I understand the point of the comment.

People in China put Snakes in Wine. It promotes a longer life and greater vitality.

i was going to say he same thing...it was on an episode of taboo, they also use bears and other animals, but snakes are one of the most common i think :shrugs:

Oh sorry I missed that. Has that actually been scientifically proven? How does it promote longer life and greater vitality?
Does it really matter? Has anyone proven that lobsters offer health benefits over other food choices? Yet people still drop them alive into a bowling pot of water and there's no outrage about that.

well its already done so getting upset about it isn't really going to solve anything, that's why i don't care either way i eat what tastes good i'm not gonna judge anyone on what they believe at least he didn't just kill them and leave them sitting somewhere to rot, he at least made use of

Actually, a lot of grocery stores have stopped selling live lobsters because there were a lot of people outraged by the whole live boiling thing. Maybe that didn't get a lot of press on the snake forums, but being in the grocery business at the time it was happening, it was the hot topic for a few months....
