During the summer of 2013 I found a baby milk snake in my garage. A few hours later I had a 10 gallon tank set up with appropriate equipment to properly raise and keep the little guy (or girl). I fed the snake a pinkie and he (or she) is now over 21 inches long, has moved into a 50 gallon vivarium and is thriving.
No more than a week after I moved him into the 50 gallon enclosure, another baby milk literally showed up at more doorstep. Having a newly vacated 10 gallon tank and all the appropriate fixtures just sitting around, I decided to keep the little guy (or girl). I'm having a heck of a time getting him to eat. He "strikes" and latches on within a matter of minutes of me putting him into the feeding enclosure, but, after wrapping himself around it and trying to get it down for about 30 minute, he lets go. Last week I cut the smallest pinkie I have in half, from head to tail, and left it in the feeding enclosure with the snake overnight. No dice. He tried and let go after awhile. In fact, he tried several different times.
He does seem to be a tad bit smaller than my first wild-caught milk, but looks as healthy as can be. I've read that some snakes are just born with digestive issues and die, but it's rare. I've also read that its fairly uncommon for a baby milk not to take down a pinkie soon after birth. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I cut the pinkies into 1/4 pieces?
