Egg hatching/Vacation question...??

Gralena

Corn Snake Diva
Hi guys!! I am anticipating my very first ever clutch of corn snakes very soon. The eggs were laid 5/20. They are incubating at 84 degrees. If they hatch in about 60 days that would put them hatching around July 19. Problem is, I will now be out of town July 17, 18, 19. So a couple of questions....(I am praying they wait til I am home!) :)

1. IF they hatch while I am gone, will the babies be ok all together in the egg box inside the incubator?

2. And, my egg box currently has no air holes and is about 98% humidity. Should I put holes in the box before I leave since I will not be around to monitor them?

3. And should I worry about putting water in the egg box...would they need to drink in that 3 day period if they hatch?

4. Has anyone had this happen...where they had to be out of town when eggs were hatching?

1. IF they hatch while I am gone, will the babies be ok all together in the egg box inside the incubator? Yes, they will be fine. I personally leave mine in there until they've all had their first shed. Usually 10-12 days from hatching.

2. And, my egg box currently has no air holes and is about 98% humidity. Should I put holes in the box before I leave since I will not be around to monitor them? I would put a hole in the egg box.

3. And should I worry about putting water in the egg box...would they need to drink in that 3 day period if they hatch? I don't put any extra water dish in the box after they've hatched. They are still absorbing yolk, and appear to do fine to me.

4. Has anyone had this happen...where they had to be out of town when eggs were hatching? Yes, my first two clutches hatched while I was on my Field Biology adventures.
Of course, they'll probably decide to hatch either before you leave, or wait until you get back, or several days after you get back. ;)

Yep, been there many times. Drizz hit it 100% they will be fine, though make sure there are air holes in the egg containers as he stated.
I have at clutch at day 65 today, We are leaving tomorrow for 6 days with no one to check on them. I will most likely come back to a clutch of little heads looking at me. I kinda like when they hatch and I am away. really makes coming home exciting to see whats waiting for you, otherwise I would just be sad vacation was over! lol!!
GO, ENJOY, and don't worry:)

Brent hit all the points beautifully, but left out the stress you will feel given that it is the first time for you. I was on an Alaskan vacation when it first happened to me. An amazing trip but I still thought about those pips all the time. The first thing I did when I got home was run to the incubators. What a rush to see their happy little heads.:dancer: In any other birth situation I'd be counting fingers and toes but they're snakes soooo...

Thanks everyone...I feel much better. I have 2 children and I don't remember their births being this stressful. ;) I think I just had this idea that I would get to see the entire hatching process and get to take pippie pictures...I hope I don't miss that!!
