alrite im new at raising a corn snake, so i need a little insight. right now my normal cornsnake has hisown 20gallon cage, heis about 15 in. i need to know if putting two nice size plants in the cage will be too cluttered because he has a hiding place already( the hollowd out half piece of wood.) Is that hiding place good or no. also i haven't had him long enough to see him shed any tips on what he needs? i only have a regular heating lamp and at night when i turn it off i feel that it gets too cold what should i do to keep it warm enough for him. finally im using this beding that is like a soik but not dirt when i bought him thats what the pet store was using should i change the type of bedding he has?

Viv set up

I could be wrong but it sounds as though you only have one hide. I would suggest getting the Corn Snake Manual, and also reading
this old thread it has some good descriptions of basic viv set ups and also touches a little on plants.
Welcome and good luck!

Okay this is what my corns have.

1 faunarium (basic tank)

heat mat under 1side (covering no more than 1/2 the tank)

thermostat set at 85degrees with probe taped to heat mat

Reptibark/Newspaper substrate

Water bowl big enough to soak in

1long hollwed out bark that stretches across the tank so they can thermoregulate and hide

1plant

Digital thermometer/hygrometer (i alternate between tanks)

If you haven't got a heat-mat and stat i STRONGLY suggest you get one as well as a stat.

ixprincessxi, do not use soil in your vivarium. Soil can be very dangerous to many snakes (including cornsnakes) for many reasons, including it can go down the snakes mouth very easly and that can kill your snake. I advise you to get something like, newspaper, kitchin roll, aspin, woodchip or some sort of reptiles carpet.

Good Luck

I have an under the tank heater, as well as a heat lamp. I found that the cool side of the tank was WAY too cool. My house in the winter is kept at relatively low temps, so the viv was only about 60 in the cool end. With the heat lamp pointed directly down at a basking rock, the temps on the side away from it stays around 75 degrees. The heat mat is in one side of her hider cave. I also have a plant in her viv, and she loves to lay in the bowl of the planter in the afternoon. She just curls up in there and snoozes until the lamp goes off. When it's dark, she cruises around and looks for escape routes :)
