Escaped snake :(

I hate to be making this post! My brother came over to my house on Saturday to feed the dog while we were out of town, and apparently he opened the snake tank and didn't do the latches back properly. I decided I had better see why I hadn't seen Joey peek out at me for a couple of days, and realized the lid was loose. I frantically dug through his aspen, and, yep, he's gone. I'm so sad right now!!! I am really beating myself up for not checking on him sooner, I am pretty certain we saw him peeking out of his hide at least one night since we've been back, so we could have prevented this. We've looked all around, but there are SO many places he could be hiding. Cross your fingers that he shows up, please!!!

Welcome to owning snakes! At least 70% of the people on this forum have had at least one escapee, whether they had little or lots of experience at the time, so don't beat yourself up too much. I recently found my 3 year old male phantom who had been missing for close to a month. My other corn snake to escape was found within five days. Both of them got out while I was out of town as well, on separate occasions. Don't give up hope on finding him, most do eventually turn up.

I once found a hatchling downstairs, across the house, under a book, beneath another snakes cage. Look EVERYWHERE. Alot of times they will follow along the walls until they find a place to crawl into. Look for small spaces that may be warmer then other parts of the house. You can also setup tape traps, not duct tape, use painters tape or something else that is not extremely sticky. You can put down flour and look for snake tracks in it to get an idea of where he is hiding. Put his hide out in the room somewhere and make it warm. Search the forum for lost snakes. People have come up with some crazy ways to catch em.

Good luck

Good advice. ^
Also remember to look up! They can climb up into some very surprising places.

I lost my Amber a few weeks ago and understand its a stressfull experiance, I got lucky by making bottle traps which I stuffed with old mouse bedding. I put a few of these in the room I lost her in ,put. Some water down and then was on holiday for a week, now she's home safe an sound

Mine was found in the vacuum cleaner in the closet directly adjacent to his viv. That closet is the place he tends to move to when I let him slither around the floor. It's dark and quiet, and looking back the best hiding place for a snake.

Thanks, everyone. He hasn't shown up yet, we haven't seen any sign of him, so we are trying a bottle trap tonight. Wish us luck!! I've been like a kid at Christmas every time I come home or wake up, expecting to find him.

if you successfully tape trap the snake, you can use olive oil on the snake skin and SLOWLY, painstakingly SlOwLy remove the tape.
Bottle traps.
f/t mousies laying around in various rooms (then if one is missing, you get an idea where in the house the snake is)
Talc powder on the floor along the edges of walls...and look for trails...
leave / create places to hide around the edges of floor/walls.
change your sleep schedule to vampire hours, leave a fan running across a live mouse or 3, and haunt the house with a flashlight all night long

Hooray! I was packing for a camping trip this weekend, and went to the hall closet to grab my saved pile of dryer lint (fire starter). The hall closet door sits open at all times. It wasn't a huge pile of lint, but it was just big enough for Joey to be hiding under and startle me when I uncovered him! He was gone for just over two weeks. I am so happy that he is back!
