Escapes and Vivariums

Okay, hey all,

Recently, my corn snake of 18 months has decided to become adventurous and try his luck with getting out of his viv. Thanks to him, it has been brought to my attention that my second-hand viv isn't appropriate for him! :headbang:

So, it turns out that he's managing to squeeze out of the sliding door gap... and so, I'm planning to invest in a new viv (once I find him again - he's out again... :/), but I just want an opinion before I start forking out the cash! So, uh, what would you guys say about this one? Is it appropriate for a corn?

It's 90cm x 45cm x 45cm, by the way.

I have the same viv - is it the 36" x 14"? They are safe enough, except you have to double check that the doors are latched properly. Also, the top screen is a little weak if you have cats who like to snake-sit like mine. I bought a rigid Zilla screen and put it right over top to reinforce it. If there's nothing to weigh on it from the outside then it's fine.

And I removed the styrofoam backdrop, even though I kinda liked it, because Rigby kept wedging himself behind it and getting stuck.

Yeah, it's the same one! I'm glad to hear that it works! Luckily, I don't have any cats or anything like that. After this experience, though, I'll be locking, double-checking AND triple-checking!

Rigby? Awesome name! Would you recommend taking that out then?
Unfortunately, I wasn't very good at feeding Pretzel, my boy (I think), the right sizes of meals, so he's a little bit small at the moment - pencil thin at the moment.

On another note, he's missing (again) and I'm going out of my mind... D:

Thanks re: Rigby :) my older 2 are named after Cartoon Network characters.

I wouldn't automatically get rid of the styrofoam. Just keep an eye on it and do something if it's a problem. It's not like he almost died or anything, I just didn't like him going back there and pushing it out.

Tell me about it! I genuinely thought I was gonna cry, he's never been gone for more than a few hours before. Thank god he's safe and sound!

Jesus, thank God they stay safe then! I have a massive gundog (Weimaraner) but he didn't even seem to mind. I'd like to think he's been looking after Pretzel for me for these past few days. c:

I have the same viv. On the top, in the two back corners, there are slots for cords with sliders to cover them when not being used. Keep an eye on these. My baby corn was able to break out through these. I sealed them shut, leaving only the ones available that were actually in use. The sealing isn't strong enough in case I need to break it in the future to change out cords or whatever, but its good enough to keep em from being pushed aside by my corn. XD

Ooh, thanks for the heads up, kushkitt3n! I kinda had this pointless old viv... >.< How does it work with heat mats? A website doesn't show too many details, unfortunately.

The entire bottom of the viv is glass, so no problems attaching an UTH.

I have a good trick for attaching UTHs that are the peel and stick kind and are SO sticky they can't be removed from whatever you put them on.

Take a sheet of aluminum foil twice the size of the UTH, peel and stick the UTH to the foil. Fold the foil over the whole UTH and then tape the wrapped UTH under the tank.

When you need to remove the UTH (for cleaning the whole viv or swapping it to another viv) you won't damage the pad or the wires of the UTH, it will just tear the foil off. And the foil doesn't hinder the heat put out by the UTH.

Ohhhh thanks for the tip, smigon! I was wondering what I would do if I decided to change vivs or whatever. Great idea. :)

I've got the same viv. Seems solid. Awaiting my corn snake tomorrow morning actually.

I'd watch out for those probe holes. It has sliding plastic blocking pieces to block them off, but I also added a piece of tape to hold down the slider juuuust in case.

Otherwise it's solid. Lots of replacement parts for it too.
