Euthanizing Mice

I was just wondering about this but we all know Carbon Monoxide is a very poisonous gas. CO comes from the tail pipe of your car. So what if you placed the mouse or rat or whatever you're feeding to your snake in a box that's hooked up to the tail pipe of your car? The CO will just cause it to fall asleep and then it'll just die, painless death.

Would you then be able to feed the CO poisoned mouse to your snake?

Please Note I've never hooked up boxes and mice up to my truck or any animal for that matter, I was just wondering if this way of killing the mouse and feeding it to your snake was possible. I heard people would put the mouse in a pillow case and wack it up against the wall to cause BFT (Blunt Force Trama)

CO poisoning them sounds better then slamming them against the wall in a pillow case IMO.

So has any done/tried/thought/heard about this?
(This is of course if you buy/breed live mice to feed to your snake, not if you buy frozen mice online)

Your input will be greatly appreciated.

You might wanna avoid this as exhaust temps on cars can be fairly high. You don't wanna cook your snakes dinner. There are plans around here for humane CO2 tanks that are fairly cheap and easy to make.

I see, thanks for the replys lol

I was just wondering if it would be possible to do that without endangering the wellbeing of the snake.

I'm sure it would be possible...but suffocation is far from painless. And the carbon monoxide replaces all of the oxegyn in the blood stream from inhalation...I'm unsure of the effects caused by ingesting CO saturated blood versus O2 saturated blood. I'm not sure if a study has even been done on such a thing...

There are all sorts of impurities and toxins in exhaust (ever tasted fruit that's grown near a main road? It's FOUL.) ...

Carbon DIOXIDE is far more humane, cleaner and safer to eat.

Just asking lol I don't want to start a debate

I don't even own a snake.... yet.... :grin01:

Death by CO though is painless, the mouse will just go to sleep and then eventually die. (Not refuring to it being via car)

Yea CO2 is effective and humane if done properly. Doesn't cost that much after the initial expense for the refillable tank.

I would be afraid of what it looked like to the neighbors if I had some weird contraption connected to my exhaust pipe =)

I go outside with my mice and hold their tail and swing them on a slab of concrete. I HATE killing mice cause their so cute but this kills them very fast instead of suffering. My dad can flick mice and kill them instantly but i would never try that cause i know i could never flick them hard enough to kill them. I considered CO2 but this is the cheaper and quicker method IMHO

I tried the "whacking" method but the first attempt didn't work very well so I bought the 20 oz CO2. Plus, breeding them, at one point I had fairly high production and there would have been just too many to deal with that way.

Dont think I could bring myself to give a mouse a 'killer flick'!! Il stick with frozen for the time being!!

This was exactly my concern when i started. I put off even getting a snake because I didn't want to lose respect for my mice and rats, as stupid as they may sound to some of you, but I have pet mice and rats and i hold them everyday and i still think their awesome no matter what but I guess when it comes to down to it, it has to be done unless your feeding frozen but i figure why buy frozen when i can produce them myself cheaper. Before I started killing the mice myself i did buy frozen pinks at petsmart but at 11 bucks for 6 pinkys i feel that's not even a full litter lol

I kill mine with Co2. It's easy, humane, clean, and very difficult to get wrong.

I use spinal dislocation. Grab the mouse behind the ears with one hand, and at the base of the tail with the other. In one quick motion, snap your hands in opposite directions, breaking the spine and severing the spinal cord. Instantaneous death...no pain, no agony...and it never fails.

Be careful, though. It takes a couple tries to get a feel for the amount of strength needed. I had more than one tail rip completely out of the mouses body when I first tried this method. The mouse still died instantly...but it was pretty freakin' gross...

You need to be quick and sharp in your movements, but it doesn't take a whole lot of strength for mice. Rats require a bit more strength, and I usually give them a good whack on the table first so I don't get my fingers bitten off...

dry ice works too and it's cheaper than a CO2 tank.

BTW the idea with the car exhaust might land you a slot on Jeff Foxworthy's upcoming comedy tour.

In the short term, perhaps, but with long term use dry ice will end up being more expensive. A 20 oz tank has an initial cost, but after that refills are minimal and they last a LONG time. I spend $2 every 6 months for refills.
My only source for dry ice is $7.50 for 10 lbs. There is no way I could use up 10 lbs before it would evaporate away. Even with a cheaper source of smaller quantities of dry ice it would end up costing more, plus you would have to run to the store every time you need dry ice to kill mice.

really? i got fined...

Huh? i didn't mean the sidewalk LOL, My porch is concrete, If I don't use concrete then I don't use anything cause i'm not taking a chance of the mouse moving after I swing it, I would feel way to guilty for that.
