Hey all, how do you get the female out of the egg laying box? I didn't have much trouble getting the eggs out last year and with the first two girls this year but the last momma is curled and intertwined around her eggs. I guess it is my fault since the eggbox is kinda small. Any suggestions? Clint? Rich? Frank? Serp? et al. Thanks in advance to any and all replies, serious or comical.

the old snake in the box, is that like a jack in the box??? Ok now how to fix the probelm:
Step 1: pack box including snake and eggs in shipping box
Step 2: ship box to me
Step 3: I'll send empty box minus snake and eggs back to you!!

Just kiddin man, sounds like quite an issue. And I wish you the best of luck!!

eggs

Oh I would imagine I could find some use for them..i got a couple of empty incubators that need a little use. Although i would have no clue how to care for them!! My snakes are all 02's so i have a little bit before they get to that stage..But it wouldn't hurt to practice being a "mom"

PS what color/morph are the eggs??

Your best bet is to reach in and just pick her up quickly and smoothly. If you waste to much time she will twitch around and disturb the eggs. I usually pick the eggs out, but with stubborn females I've found picking the snake up better.

Thanks Clint, but there in lies the problem, she is kind of intwined in the eggs and boy have I seen A LOT of the twitching. That stuff is spooking me. I'm worried that she will squash an egg or two or three. It is probably my fault, the eggbox is kind of small so it is not like she could lay the eggs and crawl off to another corner. I used one of the plastic boxes you get turkey in from the Honeybaked Ham stores.
Any ideas on how long they usually stay in with the eggs?

Thanks again.

Sounds like quite a predicament...can you maybe lure her out by dangling a mouse near the entrance hole? She should be hungry..
Next time you'll probably be using a bigger nesting box, huh? :) When my teacher's snake was ready to lay eggs, we used a Nike shoebox with one of those hinge lids so you can swing it open and closed. We cut an entrance hole on the side so she could get in and we filled the shoebox with sphagnum (sp?) moss. Then when she finished laying the eggs we swung open the lid, lifted the eggs out, closed the top and the eggs went straight into the incubator. Juliet (the female snake's name) stayed in the shoebox for a few more days I think, although we did take her out once to feed her 2 fuzzies.
Hope she comes out soon so you can put the eggs in the incubator. I think the eggs are pretty tough so they hopefully won't be too damaged by her thrashing and twitching.

She's out. I looked in and she had moved more on top of the eggs instead of intwined so I moved a couple of loose eggs and pulled her off. I wasn't too worried because she was in damp sphagnum and the temp is what it would be in the incubator.

That's it!

You just have to play it by ear. You saw your opportunity and did what you needed to do, good job!
